Not all chew toys and treats are tooth-friendly. 🦷🐾

We see fractured teeth from overly hard chews every single week, and many pet owners are surprised to learn that items like antlers, bones, yak chews, nylon toys, and even some “dental” chews can crack teeth.

A good rule of thumb: if you can’t make a dent in it with your thumbnail, it’s probably too hard for your dog’s teeth.

Broken teeth are painful and often require extractions or advanced dental procedures under anesthesia. When choosing chews, softer and more flexible is usually safer. When in doubt, ask your veterinary team for recommendations. 💛

May is Asthma & Allergy Awareness Month 🐱💨

Did you know cats can develop asthma too? Feline asthma is caused by inflammation in the airways and can sometimes be mistaken for coughing up a hairball. Signs may include coughing, wheezing, or increased effort when breathing.

Common triggers can include smoke, dusty litter, fragrances, pollen, and other environmental irritants. While asthma can be serious, many cats do very well with proper diagnosis and long-term management.

If your cat is showing any breathing changes or persistent coughing, it’s always best to schedule an exam. 🐾

On Memorial Day, we pause to remember those who served and sacrificed, including the courageous military working dogs who stood faithfully beside them. Their loyalty and bravery will never be forgotten.

May is National Pet Cancer Awareness Month. 💜🐾

This is Jax, Sarah’s sweet boy, who underwent an eye enucleation in 2023 after being diagnosed with iris melanoma in his right eye. Today, he’s cancer free and thriving in his very best one-eyed life. ✨

Cancer can affect pets just like it affects people, and early detection can make a huge difference. We’re so grateful for stories like Jax’s and the extra time they give us with the pets we love so much. 💜

Behind every patient visit is a team quietly giving so much of themselves each day. 💚

Veterinary medicine is deeply rewarding work, but it can also be emotionally heavy in ways that aren’t always visible. Within this field, the mental health crisis is real, and it touches many dedicated professionals who continue to show up with compassion, skill, and open hearts. That's why, at Oak Leaf Veterinary Clinic, we believe that a supportive clinic culture is essential, where caring for each other is just as important as caring for our patients.

To our clients, we are deeply grateful for the grace you already extend to us. We are all doing our best within a system that is often stretched thin, always anchored by the same shared goal: the wellbeing of your pets.

Thank you for being part of that shared care. 💚🐾

Dog Anxiety Awareness Week (May 4–10) shines a light on something we see every day: some pets need a little extra time, space, and reassurance.

We’re proud to create an environment where nervous dogs can build trust at their own pace—and incredibly grateful to our clients who notice and share their experiences.

Because every pet deserves to feel safe in our hands.
