There is HOPE🙏🐾
The Boykin Spaniel Health Organization is beginning discussions to support breed-specific research on intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) and disc calcification in Boykin Spaniels. Through a donor-originated grant with the AKC Canine Health Foundation, this effort would be advanced within a rigorous scientific process to ensure meaningful and reliable outcomes for the breed.

We have continued our effort of data gathering for the UCDavis Neurology & Research Departments for further studies on looking for other genetic factors that cause pre-calcification of discs in dogs with the CDDY FGF4 retrogenes (IVDD) specifically in the Boykin Spaniels. The added support of the AKC Canine Health Foundation is a big step in the BSHO's endeavors to reduce the occurrence of this devastating disease that is now 80% prevalent in the Boykin Spaniel Breed. {https://www.boykinhealth.org/what-is-ivdd-in-boykins.html}
The BSHO is also proud to now form a partnership with Dr. Denis Marcellin-Little and UC Davis on IOHC (Incomplete Ossification of the Humeral Condyle) to pave the way toward a healthier future for our breed. The development of a reliable DNA test for IOHC will give breeders the knowledge they need to make informed decisions, helping to prevent this condition from being passed down through future generations. {https://www.boykinhealth.org/a-silent-weakness-iohchif-emerging-in-boykin-spaniels.html}
The Boykin Spaniel Health Organization has been working tirelessly toward the betterment of the breed, as this mission has always been at the heart of our work. This important step forward is only possible through the combined efforts of researchers, breeders, owners, and the greater Boykin community. By working together, we can honor the legacy of the Boykin Spaniel and ensure that these remarkable dogs continue to thrive for years to come.
