Hope Haven Farm Sanctuary

Hope Haven Farm Sanctuary My name is Karen Phillips, and I’m the founder of Hope Haven Farm Sanctuary. Each one of us has the power to make a difference.

Hope Haven Farm Sanctuary is a nonprofit animal sanctuary and rescue near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that gives neglected and abused farm animals a safe, loving and lifelong home. 🐴🦙🐷🐐🐓🦃🐶🐈 Over 10 years ago now, I was working as a veterinarian at a busy animal shelter when a potbelly piglet was brought in as a stray. It broke my heart to see this innocent little animal, Isaac, who had been abandone

d by his owner and then “saved” at a shelter, now tremble and cower in the back of a cement stall, while an aggressive dog barked in the adjacent kennel. That was the day I committed myself to the goal of starting and running a farm animal sanctuary: a place where neglected and unwanted farm animals could feel safe and loved. Now, a decade later, Hope Haven does exactly that, providing a safe and loving forever home to a wide range of farm animals — from pigs, goats, chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys to horses, mini-donkeys, alpacas, emus and peacocks. (It’s definitely a lively crew!)

Creating and running this sanctuary has been the most difficult and most rewarding adventure of my life. It’s also taught me an invaluable lesson: that each of us has the power to create positivity and good in the world if we choose to do so. From the personal choices we make to the causes we support, each one of us has the ability to make life better for the farm animals that share our planet. If you feel moved to contribute to our work here at Hope Haven, we would be most grateful for your support. Our sweet dwarf horse Munchkin is the cutest little fluffster at the farm right now—her winter coat is coming in thick and cozy, and she looks like a walking teddy bear! But behind that adorable face is an important reminder: animals bred to be “mini” or “trendy cute” often face serious health issues.

Dwarf and mini horses like Munchkin are prone to diseases such as Cushing’s and insulin abnormalities—conditions she bravely manages every day. Her story is a gentle wake-up call that breeding for appearance can come at a big cost to the animal’s health. Let’s always choose compassion over cuteness. 💚

While the animals were busy enjoying their breakfast this morning, our two Great Pyrenees were sitting quietly up on the hill—keeping watch like always. Even in the dark, they’re there to protect everyone. The best guardians ever! 💛🐾

🦃 Something special is coming to Hope Haven! 🍂

We’re thrilled to announce our most heartwarming event of the year — Hope Haven’s ThanksLiving Celebration on Sunday, November 16 from 10 a.m.–1 p.m. 💛

Enjoy the beautiful fall at the Sanctuary connecting with our rescued animals, hearing their stories, and helping serve them their very own holiday feast — a celebration of compassion and gratitude. Afterward, guests can create a one-of-a-kind holiday keepsake with their favorite Hope Haven resident, enjoy vegan s’mores by the bonfire, sip hot cocoa or coffee, admire the enchanting fall raffle basket, and shop the gift store for holiday treasures.

🎟️ Tickets are extremely limited — only 10 carloads spaces available!

All proceeds support winterizing the farm and keeping our animals cozy through the cold months ahead.

Evening falls early these days… 🌙
Dusk rolls in before evening feeds are even done, and tonight the barn lights were glowing with enough light to cast these perfect shadows on the chicken coop wall. Can you guess which two Haven friends are making these silhouettes? 👀💛

Morning Gratitude 💚

There’s something so special about seeing our new little goat exploring by the pond, nibbling on plants and soaking in his freedom.

Just knowing that this sweet boy would have already been slaughtered if he hadn’t come to Hope Haven makes moments like this feel even more precious.

Watching him feel safe, loved, and at peace reminds us exactly why we do what we do — and fills our hearts with gratitude every single day.
