Pet Pro Kitty Tips

I recently shared this to a moms group, but felt since I typed it all out…. I should probably share it with you too!!!

How many of these do you do with your kitties!?!?!?

- always have a plus 1 for littler boxes.
2 cats = 3 litter boxes

- always use UNSCENTED litter. Preferrably non clumping (wet clay hurts their nail beds and is not “natural). But the fragrances are so harmful for cat respiratory systems.
And….. while I’m on this soap box….. get rid of all those plug ins, warmers, wax melts, etc! Not good for cats, kids, nor adults!!

- when picking a litterbox, measure 1 1/2 the length/width of your kitty.
(Use under bed storage totes).
Think…. Cats are always in flight mode. There is nothing worse than having to potty in a tight closed space for cats. This causes an amazing amount of stress and anxiety. Which leads to UTIs, crystals, peeing in the laundry baskets/beds/furniture.
Trust me. If you think the box is big…. Go bigger. And for goodness sake, keep it uncovered.

- clean litter boxes 2-3x a day and remove waste from the area.
Again…. Highly scent sensitive kitties don’t want to use a dirty/smelly bathroom (would you?). So take the waste outside to the trashcan!

- keep litter around 1 - 1 1/2” deep at all times.

- wash litter boxes with hot soapy water between litter changes. (At least 1x a month)

- when introducing new pets to the family, set them up in a safe smaller space. A laundry room or bathroom is perfect for new kitties. Offer a kitty gate to allow them to scent and nose boop without fighting.
Wait 3-5 days to allow the new kitty to locate food, water, litter. Then begin to allow them to explore the house under supervision. I reccomend am/pm playtimes. Then return them to their safe space.
After 4-6 weeks you can allow them to have free range of the home, but make sure to keep food, water, and litter in their safe space. Slowly moving it to another area over time if you prefer them eat/potty somewhere else.

Feel free to ask any more questions, and check out a few of my favorite kitties below….. 😉

Many of our
local Pet Professionals attend annual training at the Texas Pet Sitters Association conference.
Kitty enrichment and care are always a fun topic.

SPAY/NEUTER FUNDING THROUGH THE ANIMAL-FRIENDLY LICENSE PLATE PROGRAM

SB 1568, authored by Senator Zaffirini and Representative Curry, passed during this legislative session and will take effect on September 1, 2025.
SB 1568 will allow for the creation of a specialty license plate featuring the words “Spay, Neuter, Adopt,” in addition to the current “Animal-Friendly” license plate. The Animal-Friendly plate has not been updated since its original passage, so we’re excited to offer a much-needed alternative. The original plate will remain available for purchase.
“Spay, Neuter, Adopt” is a powerful message promoting responsible pet ownership and care across Texas, with a broad reach on the state’s highways. More importantly, $22 of the license plate cost will go into a dedicated state fund that supports low-cost spay and neuter services throughout Texas. With increased funding, this vital program will be able to expand access, especially for dogs and cats in rural and underserved communities.

🚨 BIG NEWS for Animal Welfare in Texas!

In a historical move, the Texas Legislature has appropriated $13 million for a two-year pilot program to be administered by the Department of State Health Services (DSHS). These funds, pending final approval by Governor Abbott, will be used to reduce the number of unvaccinated, unsterilized dogs and cats to prevent the spread of diseases like rabies, toxoplasmosis, and leptospirosis.

This pilot program means DSHS develops rules and procedures for how the funds will be administered and distributed, so we anticipate implementation will take several months.

THLN will be monitoring the rollout closely, and we will be hosting stakeholder meetings to gather input from shelters, veterinarians, rescue groups, and local municipalities across the state.

This is a major step forward, but just the beginning! Stay tuned.
