🐴 Wondering what your horse’s first week of training looks like?

✨ It’s not about riding on day one. It’s about building trust and helping them understand what’s being asked of them.

Here's what we focus on:
🧠 Clear, consistent groundwork, getting them soft and respectful
💡 Calmness > speed
🔁 Pressure and release
🐾 Exposure to new things (yes—trail walks, too!) Lots of exposure

The first week is about showing your horse we’re on the same team. Teaching them what is expected of them and setting up a routine.

Spring is upon us... so are the April showers!

Now is a great time to take care of scheduling any spring appointments for your horse. Making sure your tack is clean, safe, and ready to go for the spring and summer riding.

Making sure your horse has a dry place to stand and get out of the rain during all these storms will help keep them healthy and happy.

What is something you do every spring to make sure your set up for success?

In on consignment! Scout is a 14yr old 14hh pony. He is as sweet as can be. Will meet you at the gate. Easy to catch, higher on the pecking order. Stands all day for grooming. Great for the farrier, vet, dentist. Has solid feet, never been lame, never foundered. Super easy keeper! He stands to be saddled and takes a bit great. Rides in a d ring snaffle Loads right up into the trailer. Trailers great. He rides western, ba****ck and would probably also ride english. He rides down the rode, trail pony deluxe and prefers the trails. Will pull away and ride away from the group. Goes through puddles. He prefers to walk and trot but will canter. He is currently out of shape. Goes over ground poles, weaves standing poles. Has a great stop under saddle, moves off leg pressure, backs great. Walks and trots in hand great ground manners. Easily picks up all 4 feet. Stands to be mounted. Lunges on a line or free lunges in a round pen off voice. No bolt to him. Horses running around him in the arena and he doesnt care A beginner could walk on him all day long. Recommend a beginner with a trainer or advanced beginner/ intermediate rider.

What Every Owner Should Know Before Sending a Horse to Training

Sending a horse to training is a big decision—and partnership is key. Here are a few things that help horses (and humans) succeed in the process.

1. Setting your horse up for success by making sure that they are utd on shots, coggins, dental, farrier and body work if you do it regularly. This makes sure that they are healthy and ready to go into training.

2. Set realistic expectations for you and your horse. Talk to the trainer before hand and come up with realistic goals and timeline.

3. Send your horse with things they are used to at home. Certain fly gear, certain fly sprays or ointments, grain or supplements. Making sure that the horse has the things that keep them comfy at home while in training is key.

4. Consistency at home post training. Your horse is set up for success when it leaves the barn and is ready for you to continue at home. Making sure that you follow through with the training you were taught in your lessons to keep the horse going in the correct direction.

Is your horse feeling stiff?

Sometimes when our horses go into training or are going through a lot of intense work they will get stiff and sore just like humans.

Here are 5 signs that maybe it is time for a chiro appointment or a massage appointment for your equine friend.

Your horse is an athlete and tries their hardest for you. The least we can do is make sure that they are feeling the best that they can. Here at BFF we believe in regular maintenance for all of our training and lesson horses.
