Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society

Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society Saving lives, giving compassionate care & finding forever homes for thousands of animals since 1987.

The mission of the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society is to provide a caring and compassionate home for the animals in our care until we find them a forever home. On any given day, we may have up to nearly 100 dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens in our nonprofit, no kill shelter. Our shelter is tucked away on 10 rolling acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains, surrounded by the natural beauty of scenic fore

sts, mountains, waterfalls, rivers, and lakes. The dogs and puppies romp and run in spacious outdoor play yards during the day. In the evening, they are all brought indoors to sleep in their own kennel, on their own bed, with biscuits, toys and soothing music. The cats and kittens are free to play and interact in cage-less community cat rooms – each with a screened porch and large windows. Their lives are enriched with toys and daily socialization by staff and visitors alike. We welcome visitors to our shelter Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Through your support, we can maintain a high quality of care and high adoption rates for our dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens.

HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: RASCAL – Rascal was found as a stray in Scaly Mountain when he was just a little tyke. Now three years old, Rascal has grown into a handsome young adult tabby. Rascal is a little on the timid side around humans, but he loves playing with other kitties, and he especially enjoys cat toys and lasers.

As a longer-term resident CHHS Hero Pet, the adoption fee for Rascal is only $50 which includes already being neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, tested negative for FeLV, FIV and heartworms, a free starter bag of food, and a free ID tag. HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: FLOOF – Four-year-old Floof mostly keeps to herself but she does love people and she likes the company of other felines, especially if they tend to have a more laid-back personality like she has. We think Floof would be the ideal kitty companion for someone who wants a couch potato cat to binge watch television with. 😻

As a longer-term resident CHHS Hero Pet, the adoption fee for Floof is only $50 which includes already being spayed, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. To give Floof a forever couch, a forever television, and most of all a loving forever home, please click on the application link below or call (828)743-5752 for more information.

Wiggles’ name is quite fitting. Because she is always full of, well… wiggles. 🤪 And no one can blame this beautiful two-year-old for wanting to romp and run whenever she wants to.

Because for the first two years of her life, she wasn’t allowed to.

Wiggles lived her life on a chain. 😔

Wiggles is a happy dog and loves getting, and giving, love and affection. She is still figuring out how she feels about other dogs, which is understandable, given her previous life of isolation. We believe that Wiggles would thrive with a human companion who lives an active lifestyle and who understands that unconditional love means unconditional. For some lucky person or family, Wiggles is going to be an ideal adventure buddy.

Wiggles’ adoption includes already being spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, a free starter bag of food, a free ID tag, and a free after-adoption training lesson with our professional dog trainer. This sweet, beautiful girl has had her spirit unchained. To share a lifetime of love and companionship, please click the application link below or call 828-743-5752 for more information.

HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: ALLAN – In September 2023 three stray kittens were found in Highlands and brought to our no-kill shelter. At the time, they were approximately eight weeks old. This is Allan, who we rescued along with his brothers Edgar and Poe. 🐦‍⬛ Allan just recently celebrated his second birthday. He is a little on the timid side and his ideal human companion would be one with a gentle, patient touch. Allan is still quite curious and playful but he has outgrown the “climbing the curtains” kitty stage. 🤪

Allan absolutely loves other cats which makes him a perfectly suited candidate for our feline adoption “BOGO” special – adopt one cat or kitten and we will waive the adoption fee for the second kitty (Poe perhaps? 💕 Edgar has since found his forever home.) As a longer-term resident CHHS Hero Pet, the adoption fee for Allan is only $50 which includes already being neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. To give this handsome kitty a forever home, please click on the application link below or call (828)743-5752 for more information.

HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: HAPPY – Last year CHHS received a call to help seven Hound mix puppies in Tuckasegee. When the puppies arrived, our compassionate and creative staff just could not resist the temptation of naming them after the seven dwarfs. Five of the “dwarf doggies” have since been adopted, and the remaining two are still looking for their forever homes. Happy is one of those two.

And the name fits. Happy is cheerful and full of playful spirit all of the time. Happy is now 20 months old, and she gets excited to meet anyone, whether two-legged or four. She loves going for walks so much that she likes to hold her own leash in her mouth as she prances around. Happy is very food motivated, treat motivated, and always eager to please.

This is an affectionate pup who will give you a lifetime of joy and companionship. A whole lot of lovin' is what she'll be bringin', so come on, get Happy! 😍 As a longer-term resident CHHS Hero Pet, Happy’s adoption fee is only $50 which includes already being spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, a free starter bag of food, a free ID tag, and a free after-adoption training lesson with our professional dog trainer. To give this happy pup a forever home, please click the application link below or call (828)743-5752 for more information.

HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: JILL – Jill is seven years old and she is a sweetheart. She is very friendly and she absolutely loves being held and being the recipient of affection and attention. Jill gets along just fine with other cats and kittens, and she tends to be the submissive one in her interactions with other felines. Jill’s ideal human companion is one who will be home a lot and won’t mind a loving kitty cat following them around the house. 🥰

As a longer-term resident CHHS Hero Pet, the adoption fee for Jill is only $50, which includes already being spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, tested negative for FeLV, FIV and heartworms, a free starter bag of food, and a free ID tag.
