Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society Saving lives, giving compassionate care & finding forever homes for thousands of animals since 1987.

The mission of the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society is to provide a caring and compassionate home for the animals in our care until we find them a forever home. On any given day, we may have up to nearly 100 dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens in our nonprofit, no kill shelter. Our shelter is tucked away on 10 rolling acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains, surrounded by the natural beauty of scenic fore

sts, mountains, waterfalls, rivers, and lakes. The dogs and puppies romp and run in spacious outdoor play yards during the day. In the evening, they are all brought indoors to sleep in their own kennel, on their own bed, with biscuits, toys and soothing music. The cats and kittens are free to play and interact in cage-less community cat rooms โ€“ each with a screened porch and large windows. Their lives are enriched with toys and daily socialization by staff and visitors alike. We welcome visitors to our shelter Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Through your support, we can maintain a high quality of care and high adoption rates for our dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens.

Ten years ago, the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society broke ground on a dream.

In 2016, that dream became reality when the CHHS Canine Adoption Center opened its doors. Over the past decade, thousands of dogs and puppies have found safety, healing, love, and forever homes. At the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society, every animal entrusted to our care is treated like family. ๐Ÿกโค๏ธ We love them, nurture them, socialize them, and stand beside them for however long it takes until each one finds a forever home of their very own.

But if weโ€™re being honestโ€ฆ there is one very special group we quietly place upon the royal throne. ๐Ÿ‘‘๐Ÿพ

The elder statesmen.
The grand dames.
Our beloved senior pets. โœจ

Earl is wonderfully chill, endlessly sweet, and carries himself with the calm confidence of someone who knows he belongs exactly where the sunbeams fall. โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸชŸ His adorable little bobtail only adds to his royal charm. ๐Ÿ‘‘๐Ÿพ He enjoys other cats, adores little dogs, and while he isnโ€™t overly demanding for attention, he absolutely melts when affection comes his way. ๐Ÿ’•โœจ

This handsome three-year-old hound was found wandering on Bull Pen Road, but those days are behind him. Now his biggest concerns?

Copper is affectionate, playful, and always ready for his next adventure. He walks like a gentleman on a leash. Until he remembers heโ€™s excited, and then, wellโ€ฆ heโ€™s an ๐‘’๐‘›๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘ข๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘Ž๐‘ ๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘ gentleman. ๐Ÿ˜„

At three years old, Poe is a quiet, tender soul still waiting for his final chapter to be written.

He is shy, yesโ€ฆ but not broken. Reserved, but full of feeling. Poe is the kind of cat who wonโ€™t rush into your arms. But with patience and kindness, he will slowly, beautifully make his way into your heart. ๐Ÿ–ค

Like the writings of his namesake, there is a depth to Poe that reveals itself over time. He finds comfort in the company of other cats, enjoys the presence of small dogs, and would thrive in a calm home where love is given gently and trust is allowed to grow at its own pace.

And perhaps, one day soon, instead of a lonely refrainโ€ฆ his story will whisper something new:

For 316 days, Creek and Church waited. Not just waited...

Waited together. ๐Ÿพ

These two bonded brothers came to our no-kill shelter last summer after being found wandering as strays in Tuckasegee, facing a world that must have felt uncertain and frightening. But through it all, they always had each other. ๐Ÿ’ž

And we promised them something very importantโ€ฆ
that their bond would never be broken. โค๏ธ

This week, that promise became a reality.

Creek and Church now have an awesome new forever mom and dad, Meg and Max, our newest CHHS Adopting Angels. โœจ And these two sweet brothers are finally homeโ€ฆ together. ๐Ÿก๐Ÿถ๐Ÿถ
