Labor Day feels like a natural turning point in the flower season.

For some, this is still a busy stretch of wedding work. For many of our CSA members and farm friends, the rhythm is shifting toward school routines and fall schedules.

This week, we’re especially excited to send Gomphocarpus to the floor for the first time. New to us this year, its bright green, balloon-like pods are exactly the kind of unusual, texture-rich stem that keeps us curious as growers.

We’re also harvesting Japanese Anemones for the first time. Planted two years ago, they are one of the quiet rewards of perennial growing — a reminder that some of the best flowers ask us to wait.

As the season changes, we’re grateful for the flowers that keep arriving, the growers and designers moving with the rhythm of the year, and the community that continues to make room for local flowers.

Last week was an eventful one for Great Ring Farm.

We had an educational and inspiring visit to the floor — seeing so many beautiful stems and enjoying a warm conversation with a florist who had recently used some of our more unusual flowers. It was such an encouragement to see photos of her arrangements and to glimpse how our flowers became part of her work.

It reminded us once again what a privilege it is to belong to this wonderful community of local growers, buyers, and designers.

Even as our availability begins to taper, we were still able to send a varied assortment of foliage and fillers to the floor this week: fresh eucalyptus, three types of scented geranium, tall Persian cress, chocolate Sedum, and an array of texture-rich grasses — including ‘Frosted Explosion’ alongside Panicum virgatum ‘Shenandoah,’ a native perennial grass we’re excited about as a local alternative.

But this week, what moved us most was something we didn’t send to the Collective.

We harvested our first tuberose of the season.

A series of challenges largely wiped out this year’s tuberose crop, so we won’t have extra to offer. But even a single stem felt deeply meaningful.

Tuberose carries us back more than thirty years, to when Chand was living in São Paulo, Brazil, and Roberta was still in college. When we first started dating, she would visit every other weekend, and one of the things Roberta remembers most vividly from those days is that there were always fresh tuberose stems in the apartment.

We could not have imagined back then that our shared love of flowers would one day lead us here — to this farm, this work, and this community.

This year’s tuberose crop may not have turned out as we hoped, but we are so grateful for the memory it brought back. We’ll bring them back in full force next year.

Even as the season begins to shift, we have a few new flowers headed to the floor this week — including a rich chocolate Sedum, crisp variegated Snow-on-the-Mountain, dainty pink ‘Proud Berry’ Symphoricarpos, and a gorgeous lime green Lisianthus.

We post often about the flowers themselves, but for us, they have always been about people. What moves us most is knowing they become part of someone else’s meaningful moments — celebrations, gatherings, goodbyes, tables, weddings, gifts, and quiet acts of care.

And behind the flowers at Great Ring Farm are people we are deeply grateful for.

Roberta is our grower-in-chief, the steady heart of so much of what happens here. Juliann came to us as an intern during our very first month, four years ago, and has been helping shape the farm almost since the beginning. She heads back to college this week, and we are so grateful for everything she has poured into this place.

And Chand is here too — harvesting, delivering, taking too many flower photos, and always learning.

Juliann and Chand will be visiting the CT Flower Collective floor this week, so if you see us there, please say hello.

Thank you to the florists, designers, buyers, CSA members, friends, and supporters who keep making room for our flowers. We are grateful that something grown here can become part of your lives and moments of joy.

Late summer has us living in two seasons at once at Great Ring Farm.

We’re still harvesting beautiful stems for the floor — and this week includes a few that feel especially exciting to us.

The Roselilies were a late addition to our availability list after they quietly crept up on us over the weekend. ‘Ciara’ is a stunning pollen-free double Oriental lily, with large vibrant pink blooms, soft white edges, and a delicate fragrance. They feel like a true late-summer treat.

We’re also sending Great Burnet, one of those unusual local flowers we get especially excited about. Its deep burgundy-maroon, drumstick-like blooms float on wiry, branching stems with fine-textured foliage, adding movement, contrast, and an architectural quality to arrangements. It is exactly the kind of distinctive stem we love growing.

And the scented geraniums we were watching so eagerly in the greenhouse earlier this year are finally coming in with enough abundance to share more fully, bringing the fragrance and foliage texture we had been hoping for.

At the same time, our minds are already turning toward next season. We’re preparing beds, starting seeds, refining crop plans, and thinking about what worked, what challenged us, and what we want to grow more of in the year ahead.

That is one of the strange and beautiful parts of farming flowers: one season is still blooming while the next one is already beginning.

After another stretch of heavy rain, this week’s harvest at Great Ring Farm was challenging — but still full of midsummer color and fragrance.

Along with a generous amount of snapdragons, we’ll have Gomphrena ‘Sequin,’ eucalyptus, lemon mint Monarda, and a few bunches of phlox — including ‘David,’ ‘Party Girl,’ and ‘Phlox of Sheep’ — heading to the floor.

We’re also especially excited about two flowers that feel familiar in name, but special when grown locally and harvested fresh: Matsumoto Apricot Aster and ‘Missantic Almendra’ Carnation.

The Matsumoto Asters bring soft, layered apricot-pink blooms, while ‘Almendra’ Carnations offer ruffled buttercream flowers that feel delicate, unusual, and lovely in the vase.

A quieter harvest week after the rain, but still plenty of beauty heading to the floor.

This week’s floor offering from Great Ring Farm is a little bit of this, a little bit of that — a few bunches of many different things.

But we have to admit: the limelight belongs to this Hydrangea.

Another new bloom making its debut this week is this copper amaranth, with its rich texture and beautiful, arching movement.

And for those who love the supporting cast, we’ll have lots of fragrant and textural foliage too — including more scented geraniums, eucalyptus, and mountain mint.

As we pause in the middle of the season, our hearts are full of gratitude.

Earlier this year, we shared how excited we were about the scented geraniums growing in the greenhouse. This week, we finally harvested our first bunch each of ‘Rose of Attar’ and ‘Lady Plymouth’ — just a small glimpse of what lies ahead, but enough to make the moment feel special.

Sometimes the beauty of local flowers is something you see. This week, we felt it as soon as we walked into the cool, dark flower cooler — the fragrance of bouquet dill, annual and perennial phlox, eucalyptus, and scented geranium all mingling together.

We do have some extra bunches of ‘Party Girl’ Phlox heading to the floor this week. We’re also excited to send a few new flowers: ‘Missantic Almendra’ Carnation and a small number of Matsumoto Apricot Asters.

With the strong volume of preorders, our floor offering will be lighter than usual, but we are deeply grateful for the support.

Thank you to the local florists and flower buyers who continue to make room for our flowers, and to the team whose work makes so much of this possible.

Midsummer is bringing texture, fragrance, and a little bang.

This week at Great Ring Farm, we’re harvesting more ‘Paper Moon’ Scabiosa pods — one of those unusual seasonal stems that keeps reminding us why we love growing local flowers.

We’ll also have fragrant eucalyptus, airy ‘Frosted Explosion,’ and some of the first gomphrena of the season. We almost decided to drop gomphrena as a crop, but this variety changed our minds — small, sturdy, cheerful, and full of charm

Also making their way in this week: Valerian, ‘Pink Manners’ Obedient Plant, and Joe Pye W**d.

After three days of heat followed by two days of steady rain, this has been a careful harvest week at Great Ring Farm.

We’ve been focused on filling preorders, watching quality closely, and making sure the flowers we send out are ones we feel good about. While our floor availability is lighter than usual this week, we still have some interesting new flowers making their way in.

The flower we’re especially excited about is ‘Paper Moon’ Scabiosa. These sculptural pods bring texture, movement, and a distinctive shape to arrangements. They fit right in with the unusual seasonal flowers we love growing.

Also new this week: Carthamus, two-toned Allium, and ‘Phlox of Sheep.’

Feeling the midsummer blues? We have some red and white to add — and even a deep, striking splash of violet.

Happy Independence Day week from Great Ring Farm. We hope this holiday brings a well-needed break, a little rest, and time with the people you love.

And if you’re headed to the floor this week, we’ll have lots of Lysimachia, more ‘Jacob Cline’ Monarda bringing that bold, beautiful red, and a heavy harvest of this vibrant Campanula, shown here, for an incredible pop of color.

Local flowers, seasonal color, and a festive touch of red, white, and deep violet-purple for the week ahead.
