Happy Vet Tech Week! This week we welcomed two new additions to the Petmed Staff. Our new damsels for our saltwater tank. We can't wait for everyone to meet our adorable fish family. Thanks again to our amazing staff of RVT's and Vet Assistants. The patients and community of San Luis Obispo are lucky to have such a kind a dedicated staff.

Priscilla – Head RVT & Practice Manager

Priscilla has known she wanted to work in veterinary medicine for as long as she can remember. In sixth grade, she wrote a report on a career of interest and chose to interview a veterinarian. Six years later, that same veterinarian gave her the opportunity to volunteer at her clinic—and Priscilla was hooked.

She went on to earn her degree in Animal Science from The Bel-Rea Institute of Veterinary Technology and began her career in general practice. After five years, she discovered her true passion in emergency medicine, where she thrives in the fast-paced environment of urgent care and critical cases. She has a special interest in anesthesia and pain management, and finds fulfillment in providing high-quality, compassionate care to the most vulnerable patients.

Outside of work, Priscilla volunteers her time with Care 4 Paws, assisting with spay and neuter surgeries to support community animal health. She also enjoys baking, spending time at the beach, and being with her husband and daughter. A devoted animal lover, Priscilla has a soft spot for cats—and firmly believes they are all angels.

Happy Vet Tech Week! Today we highlight our super RVT, Melissa. Melissa is deeply passionate about senior pets and hospice care. She is dedicated to ensuring every pet experiences comfort and dignity at the end of their life. Currently working toward her certification in end-of-life care, Melissa continues to grow her knowledge and deepen her impact.
In addition to her compassionate care, Melissa also serves as our hospital photographer—always ready with her camera and never missing a chance to capture the perfect profile picture of each patient.

Here is little bio about our superstar Melissa:
I have had a lifelong love of animals and knew from a young age that I wanted to pursue veterinary medicine. I began volunteering at an animal shelter at fifteen and started my first job in a veterinary clinic at nineteen. I became a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) in 2007 and have since gained experience in general practice, emergency medicine, exotic animal care, and even marine mammal medicine.
At home, I share my life with four dogs and four cats. I especially enjoy working at Pet Med Urgent Care because of my passion for emergency medicine. My favorite part of veterinary medicine is both the chance to save lives during emergencies and the meaningful relationships I have built with clients and their pets.
In my free time, I enjoy being outdoors with my wife, cooking, taking our dogs to the beach, and wine tasting.

Happy Veterinary Technician Week!
History of National Veterinary Technician Week
The National Veterinary Technician Week or Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week is a week that celebrates the noble profession of vet technicians. Vet Tech week is a holiday celebrated nationally, in the US only. The history of veterinary medicine started in 3000 BC with the first veterinary practices and the first-ever veterinary school in Lyon, France. Claude Bourgelat founded the school in 1761, which is when veterinary medicine officially began its course.1

Initially, the veterinary profession was centered around horses only and later spread to livestock, cattle, pets, and eventually exotic animals. National Vet Tech Week was first celebrated in June 1993, when the National Association of Veterinary Technicians passed a resolution to make this holiday celebrated every third week of each October.

While this holiday may not seem as relevant to most people, imagining the hard days and sleepless nights vet technicians experience constantly truly deserves all praise. When you only think about a technician, somewhere in the world, working restlessly to save the life of a pet, you can begin to imagine the trouble these people go through. They have an abundance of sleepless nights behind them and countless hours in the clinic, healing the broken bones and illnesses of our beloved pets.

This holiday shows gratitude to the devoted technicians and raises awareness of their everyday struggles—they often have to sacrifice their safety to help an aggressive animal in need.
