A daring eight-month-old kitten named Casper has been safely rescued after spending three days stranded at the top of a 33ft (10m) tree in Bedford. His owner, Tauseef Nawaz, and his family were left anxious as multiple rescue attempts were made before finally bringing him to safety.

Casper, known for his adventurous nature, went missing on Monday afternoon. Following his distressed meows, the family discovered he had climbed a tall pine tree in a neighbor’s garden but was unable to come down. Efforts by Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue were unsuccessful as their ladder could not reach the height, prompting them to seek assistance from a professional tree surgeon. However, the first tree surgeon who arrived was also unable to reach Casper, leaving the family desperate for help.

Determined to rescue their beloved pet, the family turned to social media, where their plea for assistance gained attention. The call for help led to Eden Tree Specialists stepping in. On Thursday morning, tree surgeon Alistair Sheen arrived at the scene. Using his expertise, he climbed the towering tree and managed to bring Casper down safely. The frightened but relieved kitten clung to his rescuer as he was gently lowered to the ground.

Casper’s family expressed immense gratitude to the local community, the fire service, and the tree surgeons who attempted the rescue. Mr. Nawaz shared how stressful the ordeal had been, particularly for his mother, Arshad, who has a deep attachment to the kitten. The family was touched by the kindness of Eden Tree Specialists, who carried out the rescue free of charge. Now back home, Casper is recovering well, enjoying plenty of food and rest after his harrowing adventure. His owners, however, are keeping a closer eye on him to prevent any future high-altitude escapades.

The snowstorm has brought record-breaking snowfall to the southeastern U.S., with Babbie, Alabama recording 11 inches and Milton, Florida reaching 8.8 inches, surpassing the state’s previous record. Chalmette, Louisiana saw 11.5 inches of snow, the heaviest in New Orleans since 1948. Other states like Georgia, Mississippi, and Texas also reported significant snowfalls, with up to 9 inches in parts of Mississippi and 4.2 inches in Houston.

Winter storm warnings and advisories are in effect, with snow and ice continuing to impact areas in Georgia, Northern Florida, and the Carolinas. Dangerous road conditions persist, and ice accumulation could cause power outages and fallen trees. Louisiana experienced its first-ever blizzard warning, as New Orleans saw moderate to heavy snow and wind gusts up to 35 mph.

Stay at home and avoid unnecessary travel, as icy and snow-covered roads are hazardous. The storm's freezing temperatures can cause dangerous conditions, so it's safer to stay indoors. Keep your pets safe by ensuring they stay inside and warm, as cold weather can be harmful to them.

A dog owner, David Benton, has expressed heartfelt gratitude to firefighters from Woodhall Spa who rescued his one-year-old terrier, Branston, after the dog became trapped 6 feet underground in frozen soil near Old Woodhall, Lincolnshire. Branston, stuck late Monday night, barked for hours as Mr. Benton tried in vain to dig him out before calling emergency services.

Using thermal imaging cameras and sheer determination, the fire crew worked tirelessly, refusing to leave until the dog was safe. After three hours of intense digging, Branston finally emerged, much to Mr. Benton’s relief. “It was like a mole popping up,” he said. “I was ecstatic.” Watch manager Ian Draper described the effort as challenging due to the frozen ground but celebrated the heartwarming outcome.

Branston is now recovering at home, and Mr. Benton, vowing to keep him on a lead for now, praised the firefighters for saving not just his dog but an integral member of his family.

Los Angeles County health officials have issued a warning to pet owners to stop feeding raw pet food after the H5N1 bird flu virus was found in samples of Monarch Raw Pet Food. A house cat in L.A. that consumed the product tested positive for the virus, and four other cats in the same home were presumed to be infected. The health department urged residents to immediately contact their vet if their pets show unusual behavior after consuming raw meat or dairy products.

H5N1 bird flu can cause severe illness in cats, including neurological symptoms, respiratory issues, and liver disease, often leading to death. While no human cases have been linked to the infected cats, experts are concerned about the virus’s spread. The warning comes after an Oregon cat died from bird flu following consumption of recalled raw pet food from Northwest Naturals.

Dr. Michael Q. Bailey, president-elect of the American Veterinary Medical Association, cautioned against feeding pets raw food, as it can carry the virus and other harmful pathogens.
