Let’s talk about one of the hardest, most heartbreaking decisions a horse owner will ever face—knowing if or when it’s time to say goodbye.

Whether it’s old age, illness, or a sudden injury… how do you know when that moment comes?

I keep coming back to one thing: their quality of life. Are they comfortable? Are they truly okay, or are we holding on because we’re not ready to let go? It’s so easy to cling to “maybe.” Maybe they’ll recover. Maybe they’ll be rideable again. Maybe they’ll at least get to enjoy quiet days in the pasture.

But sometimes “maybe” isn’t fair to them.

Last night at the barn, we were faced with that reality. The kind that stops time and makes your chest feel heavy. We had to make that call—the one no one ever wants to make. We said goodbye to a horse that wasn’t just my favorite, but one that everyone who met him loved.

In the middle of all that heartbreak, I realized how lucky we are to have the people we do beside us when everything falls apart. The ones who show up, who cry with you, and help you carry the weight of a decision like this.

Having a knowledgeable, compassionate vet you trust is so important in moments like these. Because when your heart is breaking, you need someone who can help you see clearly and do what’s best for them.

It’s devastating. It’s unfair. It never feels okay.

But sometimes, loving them means letting them go.

Dually was a great c**t to be around—one of the biggest and best I’ve ever raised, with a personality twice his size. He had a way of leaving an impression on everyone he met, and he will truly be missed.
