Attention anyone with a puppy age 10 weeks-12 months interested in group classes:

The event edit function doesn’t appear to be allowing the description to reflect the new dates, but the posted class dates are accurate. AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy will run Tuesdays at 6:30pm July 15-August 19. Due to lack of deposits, I cancelled the May 8-June 12 option and opened that timeslot for private lessons.
Please note that for the S.T.A.R. Puppy summer session, a $50 deposit is required. The remaining class balance is due 7/15 at the first class.

The second full week in April is National Dog Bite Prevention Week. This year it runs April 13-19. My first bite case client was a Chihuahua in 2016 that would bite the legs of anyone who came into the home. The truth about dog bites: in very rare circumstances are they truly unexpected. In every one of my client dogs that has presented with a human bite history, there were red flags that went unnoticed either due to lack of understanding of body language, interaction with others when the rescue dog was new into the environment and temperament had not yet been determined, intentionally placing the dog in an uncomfortable scenario (yes I’m talking to all of you who allow infants to climb all over your dog to gather social media views because you think it’s cute), or failure to implement structure, boundaries, and guidance for behavior in the home. So this National Dog Bite Prevention Week, let’s take a moment to consider steps we can take to ensure our dogs don’t become part of the statistic. No one ever thinks this will happen to them until it does. Picture of personal dog Nymeria to illustrate this point : who among you who have interacted with Nymeria would have imagined that she used to be a massive resource guarder whose first instinct was to bite when someone came too close? If you find yourself in the situation where your dog has bitten, please seek out the guidance of a skilled professional with a history of rehabilitating biting behavior.

A little bit about pack dynamics: in a multi-dog household there will always be a hierarchy. It’s also not uncommon for the dogs to “pair off.” While all the Kovas’s Legacy dogs play and live together, they definitely tend to group into their pairs for downtime. The service dogs Amarok and Vhagar are bonded. From the day Amarok and I drove to Michigan to bring Vhagar home, he always displayed a “big brother” role with Vha. Eventually Vhagar trained alongside Amarok in his early public access training. The docile temperament Nisqually and Fenrisulfr, the two who most work with reactivity clients, seek each other out when not actively playing. The Chaos Twins, Freyja and Poseidon, are the high drive, high energy duo who require more stimulation and are always the source of instigating playtime. Sweet Nymeria has always been a loner - though she tolerates everyone and at times joins in play, she would have been best suited for life as a single dog. As her hip dysplasia symptoms have worsened significantly this past year, she spends most of her time choosing to lie in her crate on an orthopedic bed. Amarok is the clear canine pack leader, providing correction to the young ones when needed.

Who has heard the saying “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?” NO DOG IS “TOO OLD” FOR TRAINING! Today 13-year-old Morkie (Maltese/Yorkshire Terrier) Cody began his journey towards overcoming reactivity. He is officially the oldest client dog in Kovas’s Legacy program history.
