Janeen's Catahoula Leopard Dog Rescue Network

Janeen's Catahoula Leopard Dog Rescue Network Over 40 years has been my experience with this breed. This is for the purpose of rescuing Catahoula Something inside me said, you can help. I had to do my part.

My very first Catahoula experience was in Arizona with a small pup of the neighbor's named Stopper. As Stopper grew, my respect and love for that dog and awe for his intelligence and loyalty grew. It would be a while before I would find out that Stopper was a purebred registered natural Bobtail Catahoula. This started my love for a breed that continues to hold me in its grip. A breed I set out to

You can snuggle wolf pups all you want, they still won't 'get' you quite like your dog: After 14,000 years of domestication, dogs have some of the same cognitive abilities as human babies.

So interesting to find out more about how smart our dogs/Houlas are! I am constantly surprised at how smart my Houlas are and how much of my "habits" they have figured out (such as when I'm going to give them a treat! ) Admin/MT

You know your dog gets your gist when you point and say 'go find the ball' and he scampers right to it. This knack for understanding human gestures may seem unremarkable, but it's a complex cognitive ability that is rare in the animal kingdom. ATTN PLEASE: AMAZON is cancelling its Amazon Smile Charity program to us and others like us. Read below. I want to thank every single one of you that have helped us by choosing us as your charity and we have truly benefitted. The deadline is February 20th and until then the purchases and charity funds will come to us as outlined below in this letter we received from them. THANK YOU AGAIN.. I hesitated to do this when I did, figured it would not be worth the effort, but it has been. (ADMIN JANEEN)

Dear Customer: *COPY OFF THEIR EMAIL TO US TODAY)
In 2013, we launched AmazonSmile to make it easier for customers to support their favorite charities. However, after almost a decade, the program has not grown to create the impact that we had originally hoped. With so many eligible organizations—more than 1 million globally—our ability to have an impact was often spread too thin.

We are writing to let you know that we plan to wind down AmazonSmile by February 20, 2023. We will continue to pursue and invest in other areas where we’ve seen we can make meaningful change—from building affordable housing to providing access to computer science education for students in underserved communities to using our logistics infrastructure and technology to assist broad communities impacted by natural disasters.

To help charities that have been a part of the AmazonSmile program with this transition, we will be providing them with a one-time donation equivalent to three months of what they earned in 2022 through the program, and they will also be able to accrue additional donations until the program officially closes in February. Once AmazonSmile closes, charities will still be able to seek support from Amazon customers by creating their own wish lists.

As a company, we will continue supporting a wide range of other programs that help thousands of charities and communities across the U.S. For instance:
Housing Equity Fund: We’re investing $2 billion to build and preserve affordable housing in our hometown communities. In just two years, we’ve provided funding to create more than 14,000 affordable homes—and we expect to build at least 6,000 more in the coming months. These units will host more than 18,000 moderate- to low-income families, many of them with children. In one year alone, our investments have been able to increase the affordable housing stock in communities like Bellevue, Washington and Arlington, Virginia by at least 20%.
Amazon Future Engineer: We’ve funded computer science curriculum for more than 600,000 students across over 5,000 schools—all in underserved communities. We have plans to reach an additional 1 million students this year. We’ve also provided immediate assistance to 55,000 students in our hometown communities by giving them warm clothes for the winter, food, and school supplies.
Community Delivery Program: We’ve partnered with food banks in 35 U.S. cities to deliver more than 23 million meals, using our logistics infrastructure to help families in need access healthy food – and we plan to deliver 12 million more meals this year alone. In addition to our delivery services, we’ve also donated 30 million meals in communities across the country.
Amazon Disaster Relief: We’re using our logistics capabilities, inventory, and cloud technology to provide fast aid to communities affected by natural disasters. For example, we’ve created a Disaster Relief Hub in Atlanta with more than 1 million relief items ready for deployment, our Disaster Relief team has responded to more than 95 natural disasters, and we’ve donated more than 20 million relief products to nonprofits assisting communities on the ground.
Community Giving: We support hundreds of local nonprofits doing meaningful work in cities where our employees and their families live. For example, each year we donate hundreds of millions of dollars to organizations working to build stronger communities, from youth sport leagues, to local community colleges, to shelters for families experiencing homelessness.
We’ll continue working to make a difference in many ways, and our long-term commitment to our communities remains the same—we’re determined to do every day better for our customers, our employees, and the world at large.

Thank you for being an Amazon customer.

LUKE: 11 years old, Neutered and fully vetted. MT DORA FLORIDA.. TRANSPORT long distance can be considere3d and discussed.. Solid commitment needed. Been with his owner since he was a year old. Needs a new home. Small children in the household and they have invaded his personal space.. he isn’t aggressive but he bit two because they did not give him space. He is good with other dogs. He is a senior. Healthy. His only other negative is he likes to bolt out doors and have a free run. That can be worked on. He needs out of his dilemma.. he tries but he is old and children are too much for him. Please I will even take a foster that will give him a few good senior years and we can discuss how it might work. I need TOTAL commitment.. Time is vital here. Please contact Janeen by phone or email. jj4@midrivers.com 406-323-3519 We love seniors.. he is a sweet boy and does not deserve euthanasia nor shelter.. we do not want to see that. (Admin Janeen)

SHOCK COLLARS

(Admin/MT) I really liked this article. I especially liked the statement: "do you want your dog to follow you because she wants to or because she is scared of what will happen if she doesn't?"

SHOCK_COLLAR_FeaturedShock or electric collars are devices placed around a dog's neck which connect to a handheld transmitter which remotely delivers varying levels of electric shocks to the dog's neck. Having already been deemed illegal as abusive tools by many countries such as Finland, parts of Canada and parts of the United Kingdom, shock collars theoretically are designed to provide an aversive stimulus to a dog as a punishment or 'correction' from its trainer or owner.

Using shock in dog training teaches a dog to avoid a certain stimulus and to stop any behavior that ‘caused’ the shock, but just because the behavior has stopped in that moment does not necessarily mean the behavior has improved or will improve long-term. The shock suppresses the behavior in that moment but does not address the behavior’s root cause.

Even though supporters of electronic training might praise the effectiveness of the method, dogs trained using these tools only comply or cooperate with the training out of a fear of what will happen if they do not comply – the dog is not truly being obedient.

Shock collars may cease a behavior in the moment, but the severe stress and anxiety they cause can lead to more aggression in the future and can create entirely new behavioral problems.
Several countries have already instated bans on shock collars, and it is only a matter of time before other countries will follow.
Rather than resort to using equipment that causes your dog fear and pain, why not try humane, force-free alternatives that are more effective long-term and that will help change the way your dog thinks and learns?

Why Should You Say NO to Shock Collars?

Shock controls a dog without allowing that dog to make choices and solve problems, which often results in 'learned helplessness' – the dog effectively learns to give up.
Shock forces a dog to ‘behave’ with little concern for the root cause of the negative behavior.
E-collar training essentially cripples an animal’s true learning ability.
Shocking a dog can actually exacerbate aggressive behavior in the future.
There are still people who vehemently defend electronic training, saying that used correctly shock collars do not cause pain, but rather just a minor irritation that the dog learns to avoid if it behaves in a desirable manner. Even if that were the case (and it's not), why resort to shock when you can get much better results with methods that motivate a dog to behave well without force and without any possibility of physical or emotional damage?

It is impossible to defend a method that has the potential to cause real harm. Even trainers that claim to be able to use the collar 'effectively' are still inflicting some level of pain or irritation on the dog.

Yet again, the simple question at play regarding the use of shock collars is this: do you want your dog to follow you because she wants to or because she is scared of what will happen if she doesn't?

Shock collars are yet another example of man’s desire for a quick fix, but positive training offers a wealth of great methods, that can dramatically change even the most severe behavioral problems in dogs.

Rather than resort to using equipment that causes your dog fear and pain, why not try humane, force-free alternatives that are more effective long-term and that will help change the way your dog thinks and learns?

I want to share a few things here that all of the comments and care from everyone and the networking has prompted. First please believe me.. I am not a one woman demon. I have people in the background.. working petfinder for me, doing youtube and twitter jobs for me/jcldr I mean, doing the website, fostering, giving me a heads up when I am too swamped to watch the posts, coordinating transports. I read and know what is going on but others call and fill me in when I am on the phone and can’t get here. Some man my FB pages for me and post dogs in need and other things I need to have help with in the share and have little time due to 11th hour stuff.. I came in to rescue 22 years ago to HELP. I want to keep you all connected. There is nothing more frustrating than a one man band trying to play all the instruments.. and it is counter productive. I want to keep helping. The response to the Smokey plea has been awesome. A few things I want to share with you though, part of our job is to educate and change perspectives, to listen to others bring us new ideas, links and perspectives and to test them out and give feed back. So this is not an attempt at explaining.. or whining.. it is sharing and keeping you abreast of things and I count that a privilege.. but.. sometimes there are things I can’t share on FB.. or email.. just by phone. It is quicker, and also there are laws and we are under state and federal laws. I have Montana to answer to if I mess up. We want to do things right.. if a job is worth doing it is worth doing right. We keep our reputation stellar so we can help all dogs. We give PEOPLE another chance to change if they are willing, we give dogs a chance so why not people? We don’t want to post things that demean, belittle or embarrass people.. and at the same time we are being the voice for the dog who has no other voice.. it is a delicate balance and needs to be done kindly and considerately and tastefully. These are hard times in the world and our country.. it is hard times for rescue. New State laws that were never there before. New legalities to consider. We cannot go out and rescue willynilly or even like we used to. We have to stay up with legalities in each State as we take dogs in or out and sometimes we are hamstrung trying to keep up. So some things I cannot put public. Liabliity and other reasons. I will give you all I can to give you a clear picture. I have years and years of practical vet experience. I have vet tech friends who help guide when I don’t know the answers. We are aware of Smokey’s condition and that it could be a disease such as cancer or other health issues.. he is grieving but we have to get him into a warm, calm environment and meet his emotional needs first and then that can come behind it. But thanks to each of you for the questions and opening things up so I can share rescue things with you and reassure you that we are on top of this with your help also.We need each of you and I will always try to come in and catch you up as soon as I can. I want to. We do have to be careful sometimes with our rescue practices also for the sake of those who donate their hard earned funds so we can keep going that way. Or those that save so they can donate stamps, gas $$, flash drives, SD cards or even other tech stuff that helps us keep things going. We cannot and will not be wasteful and frivolous with your funds.. we could never keep rescue going without those donations.. but we won’t abuse your generosity either. We want to pull our share of the load as administration and leaders in rescue. We are aware that shelters check us out.. we want them to. We want to be in one and keep this a reputable rescue. What makes a successful rescue is this: COMMITMENT, COOPERATION, CONSIDERATION, HONESTY, LOYALTY, INTEGRITY, WILLING TO STEP OUT ON FAITH and TRUST EACH OTHER. It works in every relationship in life. It is a win win. Also please believe me, we hardly have any info on the dogs we save until we get them to foster care. I cannot answer questions about them most generally. I am not holding back, we are not holding back, but.. we don’t know. Owners aren’t always honest about why they are giving up their dogs, but most are.. so sometimes we have lots of info for you on owner surrenders.. however.. dogs might grieve and act out and we can’t always blame the owner for changes that us moving a dog prompts them to exhibit. We will tell all we know about the dog, to the best of our ability. Dogs in shelters are NOT themselves.. and we rarely have any info on them. We don’t know if they like kids, cats, other dogs. That is why we have foster homes willing to test it out for us. So no we are not holding out on anyone deliberately unless it is for serious reasons to withhold.. things that should be kept private and would harm others or bring liabilities into the picture or humiliate.. maybe we think they deserve it, but that is not our standard. We are not free to just rescue any old way we choose. We have laws and feelings and privacy we must respect. We want to do this right and we need your help.. but we must do things respectfully and stay within boundaries. So I hope this gives you a little help with some of the waiting, some of the things that frustrate us all. I will respond, or one of us will, I will get on things as quick as I can or one of my other helpers in our organization will. I have a wonderful crew of helpers that have stuck like glue through the years. It would take 20 posts like this long one.. to tell you of all we have had in the background helping.. I am NOT doing this, and cannot do this alone. All the $$ in the world and all of my time given.. cannot accomplish it and get it done. Trust me when I tell you that we have a wonderful network behind us and within our JCLDR and we want you to be a part of it too in ways that you are able to.. it is connecting with us.. whether cheering us or donating or transporting, or calling, or emailing, or whatever it is. You are part of the heartbeat that keeps us keeping on. We try to inspire you to rise to help us but you inspire us to be the best we can possibly be and to share all we can with you. (Admin Janeen)

ODIN And FRAYAH in Colorado.. owner found a good screened adopter and they are together in their new home and doing well. We did not adopt them through our rescue.. but wanted to do an update. I had the privilege and guiding and counseling through the adopt process.. and I think they got a really good home and they do stay together.

Catahoula pup needs a home where he can do what his breed is best at. He was left in the middle of nowhere starved and hurt but now he is healthy and ready to work! Approximately 6 months old. He loves being outside and gets along with other dogs both male and female. He also plays with cats but I don't recommend it unless they are grown. Small rehoming fee.

I have a catahoula male—eight months old. We got him at 8 weeks and were told he was part Aussie. Within a few weeks we knew better since we had raised Aussies in the past. My husband is 80 and I am 71 and cannot handle this 57 LB PUPPY HE is very strong. We have an appt to have him neutered in a few weeks—earliest possible. We would like info on rehoming this dog. We care about him and he is smart but willful! Both of us have been injured but nothing seripus yet. Can you help us
We rescued our catahoula mix Lilly through the help of your group in California in 2015 and I'm sad to say she is not doing well and will be crossing the rainbow bridge soon. She is the best dog I've ever had, so sweet and smart. I'm heartbroken 😢💔

We had to say our very sad goodbyes to Hank on 5/20/22. When we adopted him from a foster 5 years ago I had a friend remark he looked like a Catahoula mix. I never heard of them. I contacted Janeen through this group and she gave me great advice about the breed. Yes he was stubborn, quirky, protective, hated cats and was very loving. He supported me through bad days from my rare autoimmune disease. He had cancer and was put to rest hiding under my legs. We miss him so very much. Maybe someday we’ll adopt another. For now we grieve his passing 💔🌈
