Seranoa Kennels

Seranoa Kennels Pointing dog training and boarding We offer dog boarding as well as training services for all pointing dogs.

Seranoa Kennels is located on the prairies of central Montana, south of the Big Snowy Mountains and about an hour outside of Billings, Montana. We frequently offer for sale English setters and pointers —puppies, started dogs, and finished bird dogs—to bird hunters, falconers, and field trial competitors. Because of where we’re located, we’re able to work our dogs on sharp-tailed grouse, Hungarian partridge, pheasants, and sage grouse.

Spring training always goes by faster than you’d think.

April always starts out with a group of young dogs who run the gamut from over-exuberant to hesitant and worried about being away from home for the first time. April is about adjusting to living in a new setting and learning the ins and outs of standing at whoa— at first on the training barrel and ultimately stopping for a cue from the belly collar.

May this year was a challenge, due to far more windy days than I prefer. But everyone made excellent progress and were all standing for rising birds at the end of the month.

June weather cooperated much better and let us move through the progression of backing, stopping to flush and standing to wing, shot, and fall.

We’d like to thank the folks who filled up our spring program with a first-rate batch of spring dogs who had both the will and the skill to learn.

Saddling horses and turning summer dogs loose is right around the corner…

I’d like to send out a big Montana thank you to all the folks who participated in our May and June seminars, both as attendees with their pups and as auditors.

We appreciate everyone’s participation and their enthusiasm for learning a new way of thinking about training pointing dogs.

The Understanding Bird Dogs Seminar Series takes a close look at the three stages of developing a bird dog— whoa training, yard training, and handling. By learning to think differently about how dogs learn, we can do better at helping them master the skills that make them a better dog in the field.

We’d like to also thank our good friends, David Huffine, Matthew Acker, Jason Richards, and Caroline Bartlett for coming out and helping with the program. A special thanks to Chloe Nostrant for providing an array of first rate meals for everyone in attendance.

The September seminar focuses on improving our skills as handlers in the field, and finishing a yard broke dog on wild birds. We still have a couple spaces open for auditing or bringing a dog, check out our website for details.

Good night and joy be with you all.

Rattlesnake Avoidance Training for Dogs

Each year in the United States, 150,000 dogs are bitten by venomous snakes.

Aversion training can help keep your dog safe from snakebite. We use live defanged snakes and 20 years of snake avoidance training experience to help protect your dog from rattlesnakes.

We offer rattlesnake avoidance training, by appointment, at our kennel outside of Roundup, Montana. All breeds welcome. Puppies should be at least a year old.

Call, text, or DM today to schedule an appointment.
