Feeling "Lucky?" 🍀

Lucky was originally diagnosed with congestive heart failure and was started on cardiac medications. Thankfully, his diuretic was able to be discontinued and he remained stable with normal atrial size and the absence of diuresis, which is excellent news!! 🙌🏽

His most recent visit with Dr. Rausch DVM, DACVIM, suggests that his original diagnosis of congestive heart failure may have been associated with a sudden tear of one of the tendons within his heart that attaches to his mitral valve. Such cases can lead to congestive heart failure and this heart failure can cause serious trouble. However, there are some dogs who are fortunate enough to respond well to medications and over time have their heart become more adept at handling this change in mitral insufficiency. 

We feel confident that Lucky is one of those lucky dogs!! 🥳

Happy National Mutt Day!

National Mutt Day, also known as National Mixed Breed Dog Day, is a day to celebrate mixed-breed dogs and raise awareness about the high number of them waiting for adoption in shelters nationwide. National Mutt Day aims to promote the acceptance and rescue of mixed-breed dogs, which make up 80 percent of shelter dogs. Although purebred dogs in shelters are typically adopted quickly, mixed-breed dogs often face the stigma of being less desirable, leading to longer stays in shelters. Their unique qualities are frequently overlooked, as many people are unaware of the *positive* traits that a mix of dog breeds can offer.

With great sadness, we announce that our Founder, Thomas G. Saunders, VMD, Diplomate ACVIM–Cardiology, has passed away after a battle with a chronic illness.

Dr. Saunders came to Maryland in 1982 with a vision to begin a private veterinary specialty at a time when specialty veterinary medicine was in its infancy. This blossomed into the Chesapeake Veterinary Referral Center in Annapolis, which has grown into multiple locations. Dr. Saunders completed his veterinary training and cardiology residency at the University of Pennsylvania and was part of the team that helped define some of the invaluable diagnostic and treatment procedures of veterinary cardiology today. He contributed to the early definitions and procedures in cardiac ultrasound, as well as being part of the team that performed the first balloon valvuloplasty in an English bulldog with pulmonic stenosis.

Dr. Saunders' vision has contributed to the expansion of private veterinary specialty practice and the growth of CVCA Cardiac Care for Pets, the largest veterinary cardiology group in the United States. While Dr. Saunders was at the forefront of new innovations in veterinary medicine, he was also an avid and accomplished sailor, photographer, and teacher.

Dr. Saunders, you will be dearly missed. Rest in peace.

This is Tucker! He was referred by Alpine Veterinary Hospital and recently visited us to monitor his hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (thick heart muscle disease).

After seeing Kristin Jacob, DVM, DACVIM for a recheck echocardiogram, we found that Tucker's condition has improved from his previous visit with us!

Did you know that hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most common form of heart disease in cats? This disease causes progressive thickening of the heart muscle and left atrium (one of the main pumping chambers) dilation. During Tucker's most recent visit with us, we learned that Tucker now has normal, improved left atrial dimensions as well as mild to moderate improved heart muscle thickening with normal heart muscle function!

Tucker has been seeing us since November 2021 and we'll be keeping an eye on him to make sure his heart works as best it can!

This is Annie! Annie is a happy, energetic 14 year old German Shepherd. She was referred by Palisades Vet Clinic and recently visited us for a heart murmur to get checked out!

After seeing Dr. Michael Hickey, DVM, DACVIM for an exam, we found that Annie has mild degenerative valve disease.

Mild degenerative valve disease is caused by a leaky mitral valve which creates a regurgitation and in turn causes a heart murmur.

We have recommended a treatment plan for Annie and will work with Annie's parents and primary care veterinarian to keep her happy and healthy!

This is Louis! He was referred by Benson Animal Hospital and recently visited us for a heart murmur to get checked out!

After seeing Kristin Jacob, DVM, DACVIM (Cardiology), Alyssa, and Lisa for an exam, we found that Louis has mild, stable degenerative valve disease.

His mild, stable mitral and tricuspid valve regurgitation is the cause of his heart murmur.

We have recommended a treatment plan for Louis and will work with Louis's parents and primary care veterinarian to keep him happy and healthy!
