Poor Echo is getting his cottontail kicked by Coccidia! ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐คฎ
Echo, the cuddliest teddy bear is currently on his second day of hospitalization for ongoing diarrhea. We need urgent funds so he can continue to receive IV fluids!๐โผ๏ธ
Diarrhea in rabbits is an emergency. They can quickly die if not immediately treated with fluids. Echo is being closely monitored by Dr. Brickett at Eau Gallie Veterinary Hospital. โค๏ธโ๐ฉน
We're so thankful that she got him diagnosed quickly and cares so much about making sure that he's in a good condition before discharging him.
Echo is hanging in but still feels pretty miserable. We need to keep him on the IV with lidocaine for pain and hydration as he's still passing liquid. He had been lethargic in his litterbox and grinding his teeth in pain.
This is why it's so important to house domestic rabbits indoors!โ ๏ธ They do not have the immune system that wild cottontails do. Our sweet boy Otis passed suddenly WITH NO SYMPTOMS a few years ago, and it was devastating to find out from his necropsy that it was Coccidia, which is treatable. That's why we started running f***l tests on every single intake, even though it is an additional cost.
We've also had to treat more than 30 buns for hookworms since January. They are also highly prone to ear mites, fleas, bot flies, RHDV-2, e.cuniculi, ear infections and respiratory infections, not to mention heat stroke, when they are outdoors - especially in the south. It's not worth the risk or the vet bills.
Echo just got picked up last week after being passed around to a few people. He has been through it and we just want him to be settled and be spoiled at home like he deserves!
Our account funds had been slated for 20+ spays/neuters next month. It has been wiped out to cover Echo's treatment so far and another bun who was at VEG ER on Memorial Day. Having two very ill buns at the same time is incredibly stressful but we have a fantastic community of rescue partners, fosters, and vets to get us through this time as best we can.
Thank to all of the vets who are helping to advise and support us this week!
