If you take one thing from our 3-3-3 Plan, take this: every dog needs a retreat space. One quiet spot — a crate, a bed in a low-traffic corner, a spare room — that the dog can always reach and where nobody follows it. Not the kids, not the guests, not you. A dog with somewhere to go does not have to escalate to get space, and a startling amount of what people call behavior problems is a dog with no exit. Set it up before you need it, and then hold the line on it. This single rule prevents more trouble than anything else we teach.
