🦜WHY DISEASE TESTING MATTERS: PROTECTING THE HEALTH OF OUR FEATHERED FRIENDS
Here at The Aratinga Conure Aviary, one of our biggest responsibilities is protecting the health and well-being of every bird that comes through our doors. One of the most important steps we can take is disease testing and quarantining new arrivals.
🩺 WHY IS TESTING IMPORTANT?
Birds are incredibly good at hiding signs of illness. A bird can appear happy, active, and healthy while carrying an infectious disease that may put other birds at risk. Testing helps us identify potential health concerns before they spread throughout a flock, aviary, or household.
🦠 WHAT DISEASES SHOULD BIRD OWNERS KNOW ABOUT?
Depending on the species, history, and exposure risks, an avian veterinarian may recommend testing for diseases such as:
• Psittacosis (Chlamydia psittaci): A bacterial infection that can spread between birds and, in some circumstances, to humans.
• Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD): A viral disease that can affect feathers, beaks, and the immune system.
• Avian Polyomavirus: A viral disease that can be particularly serious for young birds.
• Avian Bornavirus: A virus associated with proventricular dilatation disease (PDD) in some birds.
Not every bird needs every test. The appropriate screening panel depends on the species, age, medical history, potential exposures, and recommendations of an avian veterinarian.
🏡 WHY TESTING MATTERS IN RESCUE SETTINGS
Rescues frequently welcome birds from different homes and backgrounds. Without appropriate screening and quarantine procedures, an incoming bird could unknowingly expose other birds to infectious diseases.
Responsible disease prevention includes:
✅ Veterinary examinations and risk-based disease testing.
✅ Quarantine and separation of incoming birds.
✅ Good hygiene, handwashing, and appropriate disinfection.
✅ Preventing shared food bowls, water dishes, and equipment between quarantined birds.
✅ Following veterinary guidance before introducing birds to an established flock.
🌿 TESTING ISN’T ABOUT FEAR—IT’S ABOUT RESPONSIBILITY.
Every bird deserves a safe, healthy environment and the best possible chance at a happy life. By prioritizing veterinary care, appropriate testing, and biosecurity, we can help protect individual birds, entire flocks, and the people who care for them.
Be proactive. Ask questions. Work with an avian veterinarian. Help us make responsible bird care the standard, not the exception. 💚🦜
