How cool is this?!

We’re so fortunate to have Dr. Julia Manor on our team, teaching classes, and to have the opportunity to collaborate with her and her students on our recent study of dog behavior in daycare. We love nerding out about dogs, and getting to work alongside people who are just as passionate about understanding them makes it even better!

A study of empathy in dogs has led to a recent publication in 𝑭𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝑬𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒚 by Professor of Psychology Julia Meyers-Manor and Kalyn Otzelberger ’24. According to Meyers-Manor, this is the first study to compare multiple methods of examining empathy in dogs. With Otzelberger’s assistance, she conducted research during the 2023 Summer Opportunities for Advanced Research program. Their findings suggest that dogs are aware of human emotions and show more empathetic-like behaviors when humans appear to be in distress. The article, co-written with Teresa Romero at the University of Portsmouth in England, is titled “𝘓𝘦𝘵’𝘴 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘪𝘵 𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘥𝘰𝘨𝘴,” and can be found at the link in the comments.

Otzelberger is currently a Ph.D. student in the Institute for Human Neuroscience at Creighton University.
