Let’s talk about puppies! 🥹❤️
Here’s where we stand on the “When should I get my baby puppy groomed?” topic- and WHY.
We start puppies as soon as around 16 weeks - typically once they’ve finished their shots, and have the rabies shot in their tool bag. As close to this as possible is a PERFECT time to start! When we wait 6 months, 8 months, a full YEAR, your puppy could be behind on crucial early learning and training in the grooming salon.
Then, we love to start slow- getting them used to the salon, the tools, being around the other dogs in the shop, their future besties (their stylists!), etc. For the first time, or even first few times, we bathe, blow dry them, trim their nails, clean their ears and work on trimming around their feet, face, f***y. We don’t love starting with a full-body haircut, dematting, or full deshed process.
Why? New things are scary! The salon is loud, there’s a million smells, and all kinds of new touch and sensations. Water, high velocity air, vibrations and tugging. When we take it slow, with lots of love, puppies succeed and enjoy a lifetime of happy grooms!
If we rush into things, forcing a puppy through the process for a full haircut due to matting or severe need- it can make them fearful of the process for a long time. It’s hard to correct if they only see us when their hair and hygiene are an emergency 😞
We love making grooming positive, happy, comfortable, and full of love ❤️
