🌿 Beware of Toxic Algae! 🌊

Did you know that certain types of blue-green algae can be extremely dangerous to pets?

As temperatures rise, algae blooms become more common in lakes, ponds, and even slow-moving streams. Some algae produce toxins that can cause serious illness—or even be fatal—if ingested by dogs or other animals.

⚠️ Keep your pets safe:

Avoid letting them swim or drink from stagnant or discolored water.

Watch for signs posted at local parks or lakes.

Rinse off your pet immediately if they do enter unfamiliar water.

Know the signs of toxicity: vomiting, drooling, weakness, seizures, or difficulty breathing.

🐾 If your pet shows any symptoms after water exposure, call us right away!

🐾 Keep Their Paws Safe This Summer! ☀️
As temperatures rise, so does the risk of burned paws! Asphalt can heat up to 150°F (65°C) or more on a sunny day—even when the air feels comfortable.

💡 Here’s how to protect your pets:

🕒 Walk early or late: Stick to early mornings or evenings when the pavement is cooler.

✋ Test it first: Place your hand on the asphalt for 7 seconds. Too hot for you? Too hot for them.

🐾 Use grass or shaded paths: Softer, cooler on sensitive paws.

👟 Consider booties: Especially if you must walk during hotter hours.

🔥 Reminder: If it’s too hot to go barefoot, it’s too hot for paws!

Keep walks fun, safe, and injury-free! 🐶❤️🌤️

🇺🇸 Happy 4th of July from Cinder Rock Veterinary! 🇺🇸

As we celebrate Independence Day, we want to remind our furry friends and their families to stay safe during the festivities. 🎆 While the fireworks are fun for us, they can be stressful for pets. Here are a few tips to help your pets stay calm and comfortable:

🐾 Keep them indoors – The loud sounds can be overwhelming. Create a quiet, cozy space for them to relax.

🐾 Secure all doors and windows – Pets may try to escape if they get scared, so make sure everything is locked tight.

🐾 Stay away from the grill – Keep hot dogs, fireworks, and other hazards out of their reach. Even a small taste of something toxic could be harmful.

🐾 Keep ID tags and microchips updated – In case your pet gets lost, you want them to make it safely back home.

In addition to keeping Easter lilies away from cats, here are some other Easter-related hazards to pets to be aware of:

Easter grass
Avoid plastic "grass” in Easter baskets. If ingested, it can become anchored around the base of the tongue or stomach, rendering it unable to pass through the intestines and often requiring abdominal surgery.

Chocolate
Keep chocolate and baked goods containing chocolate out of reach. In general, the darker and more bitter the chocolate, the greater the risk. Baker’s chocolate and dark chocolate pose the biggest problem for dogs.

Pennies and coins
If the Easter bunny leaves coin-filled eggs for little ones to find, be aware that pennies can be toxic if ingested. Pennies minted after 1982 contain zinc, which can be harmful if consumed.

Plastic eggs
Dogs may find plastic Easter eggs remarkably similar to balls; however, if eaten, the sharp pieces of plastic can cause GI issues.
