Why Does My Cat Smell So Good?
Ever notice how your cat smells… incredible? That’s not an accident. Cats spend 30–50% of their waking hours grooming, making them some of the cleanest pets around. If they get food on their face or a paw in the mud, cleanup starts immediately.

Their secret weapon? A tongue covered in tiny, backward-facing spines (called papillae) that work like a built-in brush. These spines pull away dirt, loose fur, and even food traces, helping wild cats avoid predators and keeping all cats’ coats silky-smooth.

Sometimes the “good smell” isn’t them, it’s where they’ve been. Cats love warm laundry piles, sunny flowerbeds, or your favorite blanket, picking up scents from their favorite nap spots.

And then there are the paws. Cat lovers swear they smell like corn chips thanks to natural scent glands and a mix of harmless bacteria. Strange? Yes. Adorable? Absolutely.

Chloe visited Georgetown Veterinary Hospital to get a lump removed that has been bothering her. As a senior dog, Dr. Furst recommended to take preventative measures (as he does for pets of any age before going under anesthesia) to perform pre op bloodwork and/or furthur testing if needed to ensure the safety of medications used for surgery. During all surgeries, a veterinary nurse monitors the vitals at all times while assisting the surgeon. Chloe did well under anesthesia and is back to her normal self and is lump free!

This week is International Assistance Dog Week and we would like to honor assistance dogs, those who raise and train them, and the veterinary teams who keep them healthy. Assistance dogs provide more than companionship; they provide freedom and confidence to the people they help.

We love your pets like our own.

Dr. Stanley Truffini started this business as a young Cornell educated veterinarian back in the late 70’s. Since then it has remained a practice of excellence serving our local Georgetown, CT community with an incredible staff and state of the art equipment. His partner and fellow Cornellian, Dr. Carol Gamez joined him in 2003 and together they have continued to practice high quality medicine in their beautiful hospital here in Georgetown, CT. Our wonderful associate Dr. Lindsay Rosenblitt compliments our mission to give our clients and their pets the best veterinary experience.
