Update: Unfortunately, his injuries were far too catastrophic to survive and the decision to peacefully end his pain and suffering was made. Please refrain from negative comments, as we do not know the circumstances as to why this dog was loose. Our hope is to provide closure for his family.

Do you know me? Found hit by car on State Route 303 in Freedom. Taken to Portage APL and currently at emergency vet. If you know me or my owner, please contact Roxanne at 330-296-4022 ext. 107

Beautiful Empanada was adopted here at our shelter as a kitten. Unfortunately, after 2 1/2 years together, circumstances for her owner changed and Empanada was returned to the shelter.

In the process of getting Empanada's vaccines updated, we discovered she had a heart murmur. She was sent for an echocardiogram and was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the most common form of heart disease in cats. This is where the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick and causes impaired filling.

We have started her on medication, which she will require daily for the rest of her life. She will also require thoracic radiography every 6 months and a yearly echocardiogram.

If you are interested in adopting a cat, please consider Empanada. We know its a big ask, however the medication is very inexpensive and she is so very sweet and gentle and the shelter just isn't ideal for her.

If you are interested in Empanada or would like more information, please contact Roxanne at 330-296-4022 ext 107.

Props-4-Paws delivered much needed supplies (71 cases of dog canned food, 60 cases of Fancy Feast kitten, 50 bags of Cat Chow, and 40 bags of cat litter), to us this morning.
We are so thankful for everyone who donated, delivered, and made this happen!
Huge thanks to everyone who volunteered this morning to deliver such a large amount of supplies in the cold. We are beyond grateful to have such amazing, selfless, and dedicated people in our community!
Betsy also had a blast meeting so many new people and getting lots of scratches from everyone! (She’s still waiting for someone to take her home).

Hi there, Loki here👋

I'm a big, lovable boy, but I've been at the shelter since Februay. That's a long time!

I am 3 years old and I know my basic commands. I'm smart and eager to please. I am on a special diet because I have food allergies, but the shelter staff can help guide you on my diet. I really do have potential in any home but children over 10 might be best because I'm a big boy and might accidentally knock little ones over.

I'd like a home of my own, a lap to lay my head on, someone to follow from room to room... Im looking for my people! Please give me a chance.

If you are interested in Loki or would like more information, please contact Roxanne at 330-296-4022 ext 107.

We're so honored to have a program like Pets to Vets at the Portage APL funded by the Hero's Ruck put on the American Legion Post 496.

Connecting veterans to their companion animals is such a wonderful thing to witness. Dog, puppies, cats, and kittens. We've got it, and they're waiting for you.

If you have any questions about our program, please give us a call.

These tiny babies needed help badly when they arrived Saturday. Emaciated and pale, with severe dehydration, anemia, fleas, and diarrhea, we knew they might not survive.
Euthanasia, or give them a fighting chance? It would cost thousands to try...
We decided to give them a chance to live and sent them to VCA for emergency care.
They spent 24 hours under constant care, receiving IV fluids, blood tests, and medicine. They are still with us! Though they are not out of the woods, they have improved enough to be back at the shelter. Today they will have more tests, and we hope to have some answers as to what is going on.
We are desperately hoping they pull through.

We have named them Erik and Ariel. If you'd like to help us with the high costs to save them, please click here: portageapl.org/donate
