🌸Spring is just around the corner🌷Time to start thinking about vaccines and deworming! Fecals can be collected while your vet is visiting the farm or feel free to drop them off at our office. Please put them in a ziploc bag with your name and your horse’s name on it. Results are sent to you within 1-2 business days!

With spring only a few weeks away (🙌), it’s not too early to start thinking about a deworming plan for your equine companions.

If deworming is something you’ve been doing the same way for as long as you can remember, this year we encourage you to break tradition and work with your veterinarian instead. Thanks to tools like the f***l egg count, your horse doctor can help you devise a treatment tailored to the needs of your equine friend plus monitor the efficacy of the dewormer used last.

And before you dismiss this notion because you’ve been “doing it for years,” you should know that the old-school approach to deworming is quickly becoming outdated—not only a waste of money but it also builds drug resistance in the parasitic fauna of equines, which means we are running out of drugs that can effectively help us control parasite infections.

As always, consult your equine veterinarian to learn more and for questions specific to your animals!

This past Saturday we welcomed some students from The Ohio State University of Veterinary Medicine for a wet lab on Lameness. Students learned how we conduct our lameness exams, techniques for taking and interpretating radiographs, and the basics of diagnostic nerve blocks and joint injections. We are proud to provide hands-on experience and help with skill development in the future of equine veterinarians!

Thank you to Dr. Johnson, Dr. Allison, Dr. Berthold, Dr. Paradine, Dr. Rangel, and Dr. Tabin for their time and expertise!

Thank you to Boehringer Ingelheim Equine Health for sponsoring our amazing lunch!

Treatment Spotlight: Phovia-Flourescent Light Therapy

Wounds in our horses can be difficult to manage at times. They are large creatures that are always moving and much of their distal limbs don’t have a lot of tissue to manage when a wound occurs. Even when suturing is possible, we sometimes wish that there was more we could do to help decrease the odds of infection and improve the healing. Light therapy is one of those modalities that allow us to deal with both things.
Light therapies have been around for years such as redlight therapy and human hospitals utilize blue light for disinfection of rooms. Phovia unlike these other devices, is a unique type of fluorescent light therapy. Most conventional light therapies are monochromatic and only focus on one tissue type while Phovia focuses on multiple tissue types using fluorescence biomodulation. Using a special chromatophore gel this can be achieved. This type of light is non ionizing and safe for the user and the patient.
By effectively treating multiple tissue layers with different light colors a multitude of benefits can be achieved. These different colors pe*****te to different levels of tissue and provide different benefits. For instance, the blue light has anti-inflammatories as well as affecting bacteria. Red light will increase vasculature, increase collagen synthesis promoting healing as well as decreasing inflammation. Green light will also increase healing by affecting fibroblasts. By combining these colors, a greater degree of healing can be achieved.
Along with open wounds Phovia can be used to treat cracked heels, scratches, summer sores (typically with complimentary treatment) and even used post operatively on incisions. Treatments are painless and take 2 minutes. They can be performed on the farm and done weekly until both owner and veterinarian are happy with the results. Best of all this treatment is affordable and convenient.
