Horns are beneficial for protection from predators and heat dissipation. However, horns can cause problems for producers when they are handling goats, and horned goats can injure other goats in shared housing.

During the first week of life is the best time to disbud your goat kid or calf. We provide pain management for each animal. The animal is sedated and the area is blocked with a local anesthetic. We shave and prep the area. A disbudding iron and scalpel is used to surgically remove the horn bud. The area is sprayed with aluminum bandage and the anesthesia is reversed.

Did you knowโ€ฆ? ๐Ÿค”

Our mobile surgery unit is a fully equipped surgical suite! The trailer is set up with gas anesthesia, temperature control, monitoring, and surgical lighting. We routinely perform mini pig spay/neuter and utilize it for c-section in pigs and small ruminants.

Need to have your pig spayed or neutered?

๐ŸชฑParasites can significantly harm your animalโ€™s health. To ensure your animal is not affected by a high parasite burden, we suggest the following steps:

1. Annual individual f***l screenings are recommended.

2. Be proactive! If your livestock shows signs such as lethargy, pale mucous membranes(gums), loose stools, or have a rough coat, itโ€™s time for a test..

3. Our first line of screening is a McMasterโ€™s f***l test. This test will tell us what type of gastrointestinal parasites your animal has and the number of each.

4. Based on these findings, we will customize treatment plans.

This approach helps us avoid general treatments that might not be necessary or effective against specific parasites.

Contact us or visit our website to schedule an appointment today.

As silly as it sounds, the "carrot test" can be used to help diagnose tooth aches in our equine companions.

Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EORTH) is a dental condition that affects the incisors of middle-aged horses and older. As the name suggests, it acts by both resorbing the teeth and then producing large amounts of cementum (a hard substance that anchors the teeth into place).

Clinical signs such as difficulty chewing, teeth discoloration and painful gums are highly suspicious for this disease, but you can also offer your horse a carrot to assess how comfortable they are biting down. If it seems painful for them while biting the carrot, they could have EORTH!

Your veterinarian can do an oral examination and take dental radiographs to confirm the diagnosis. This is a progressive disease so there is no cure, but there are management strategies that can improve their comfort.

If you are concerned that your horse may have EORTH or is experiencing oral pain, contact your veterinarian so that they may further evaluate and suggest treatment options.

Thank you to the Horse Owner Education Committee for providing this information.

We know that hoof health is everything!

Dr. Marricle has nearly 20 years of experience shoeing horses, hoof care is more than part of what we doโ€”itโ€™s part of who we are. As a podiatry-focused clinic, we work closely with farriers to keep your horses (and other species!๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ–), sound and comfortable from the ground up. Whether itโ€™s routine hoof care, corrective shoeing, or more advanced lameness cases, weโ€™re here to collaborate and support your farrier with diagnostics, treatment plans, and ongoing care.

๐Ÿ”จ Struggling to find a reliable farrier? Youโ€™re not aloneโ€”good farriers are in high demand and hard to come by. Weโ€™re happy to make recommendations and help you connect with someone we trust.

๐Ÿ“ธ Swipe to see some of the diagnostic tools we use to support our farrier partnersโ€”including radiographs that help us guide trimming and shoeing decisions.
