Sometimes, someone says something so simple that it quietly shifts the whole course of your life.

The change doesn’t happen overnight, but that nugget becomes something your mind hunts for, even if it takes a lifetime to live out.

And the person who said it doesn’t have to think you’re special, or even like you. They just speak a truth—and suddenly, you’re walking in a new direction.

I believe horses feel that quarter-turn kind of shift, too. It’s up to us to give them a lot of opportunities to unpack and practice it.

For me, that quarter-turn happened years ago when a Horseman reminded us at a clinic that the spirit behind:
👉 “Make the wrong thing difficult and the right thing easy”

…was more about:
✨ “Make the right thing obvious.”

I've rolled that around in my noggin a bunch.

Now a days I don’t start by asking a horse to stand still at the block, especially in a tight space.

That’s a huge ask for a flight animal and will cause more trouble than necessary.

If they previously *knew* how to do it, keeping in mind that they may not have carried the baggage they carry now helps.

✨Now, I start with rhythm and relaxation to create a more stable base of support.

From there, the horse doesn’t feel like leaving, and I can ask for more.

Maybe the spirit behind this principle was lost to trainers because many of us humans are working hard to pretend we aren’t flight animals ourselves.

Just a ponder of mine 🤔

"How to get on the good side of a mare? Manage to not get in her way. Respect her independence and give her room. Acknowledge her intelligence by listening. Prove you’re not one of the crazy humans by calming your emotions; by being quiet and persistent, qualities she appreciates. Be consistent and give her all the time she needs to trust you."

Rose is not a big fan of standing still at the mounting block, a simple joy we take for granted until our horse steps away for an oh so fun game of creep away. Oye!

I can help Rose with this and here's a secret, standing to let a rider get on has very little to do with the mounting block itself.

Look at this pretty mare, Rose 🌹

I'll be working with her for a little while and am so excited about this horse.

Y'all know how much I love my old friend and training horse Freckolena Annie?

They are definitely related.

Guess who their granddad is??? 👇🏼👇🏼

They look just like him!

Where are all my and fans???

Here is an update on the golden pony himself:

Juma and his family are loving life. Emilia brings out the very best in her little rockstar ⭐

They have worked on becoming a true team this past year and with help from their and trainer Sara Rota Kalenkiewicz, they even went on adventures to a few shows!!

I truly enjoy seeing one of our ponies become part of another family's story.

I'm sure his feels the same!!!

Keep up the great work, Emilia!!! We are looking forward to seeing what this year has in store for you. Thank you for taking care of Juma. He is so lucky to be your 🫶🏼
