We proudly serve the residents of Giles County, as well as the City of Pulaski, Lynnville, Elkton and Minor Hill. Our Animal Control Officers respond to complaints regarding dogs that are running at large and handles neglect and animal cruelty cases for dogs, cats and livestock. It is our mission to inform our community of the state laws and city ordinances in place for vaccinations, tethering/cha

ining, and sheltering needs. Any dog impounded by our shelter can be reclaimed by his rightful owner during a 72 hour hold period. If the dog brought in has any type of identification we will make reasonable effort to contact the owner and the hold period will be 5 business days. Once the hold period is up, all healthy/adoptable dogs will be put up for adoption or sent to a registered 501(c)3 rescue. We are OPEN by APPOINTMENT !

Following up because apparently our last several attempts were informational only.

Still here.

Both 5 months old.
Both here since June 17th.

We have posted them before. You laughed. You heart-reacted. You tagged your spouse. Your spouse said no.

We have reviewed the data. This appears to be the problem.

Sparklebutt has TWO blue eyes. 💙💙 Boom Boom has brown eyes.

WOW.

A brown-eyed dog, at Giles County Animal Shelter. Groundbreaking.

Someone alert National Geographic.

They’re sweet. They’re adorable. They do NOT have to be adopted together.

And somehow two puppies named Lady Sparklebutt of the Republic and Lady Boom Boom Barkington have been here since June.

So tell your friends. Tell your neighbors. Tell that coworker who has been saying for six months that she’s “thinking about getting a dog.” SOMEDAY HAS ARRIVED, KAREN.

We’re beginning to question whether Facebook has accidentally categorized our page as entertainment instead of animal shelter.

These are not recurring characters, people.

You can actually adopt them.

Rescue dogs don't expect perfection. They simply want someone to love.

Many people hesitate to adopt because they worry they won't be the "perfect" pet owner.

They wonder...

"What if I make mistakes?"

"What if I've never had a rescue dog before?"

"What if I'm not enough?"

The truth is, your future best friend isn't looking for perfection.

They aren't keeping score of how fancy your house is.

They don't care if your couch is brand new or a little worn.

They won't judge you if dinner is served five minutes late or if your backyard isn't the biggest on the block.

What they do notice is kindness.

A gentle hand.

A soft bed.

A full belly.

A walk around the neighborhood.

A toy to carry around the house.

A family that chooses them every single day.

Most of the dogs that arrive at Giles County Animal Shelter have experienced uncertainty. They may have been lost, abandoned, or dumped. They didn't end up here because they wanted to.

What they're hoping for now isn't a perfect life.

They're hoping for their life.

A place where they're safe.
A place where they're loved.
A place where they finally belong.

The perfect home isn't the one with the biggest yard or the fanciest dog bed.

It's the one where a dog becomes family.

❤️ Don't wait until you think you're the "perfect" adopter.

If you're ready to love, to be patient, and to make a lifelong commitment, you may already be exactly what a shelter dog has been waiting for.

Because rescue dogs don't expect perfection.

Buddy didn't come to us because anyone stopped loving him.
His person passed away.
And now, at an age when Buddy probably thought he had life pretty well figured out, he's at the shelter waiting for someone new. That's the sad part.

Now we need to discuss the noise this old man makes.

Buddy does not bark. Ever.

Buddy says: ARR. ARR. ARR.

Always three. Not two. Not four.

ARR. ARR. ARR.

We don't know why. Those are simply his terms.

Food taking too long? ARR. ARR. ARR.

Would like to go outside? ARR. ARR. ARR.

You walked past without acknowledging him? ARR. ARR. ARR.

Understood, sir. No need to repeat yourself.

Buddy is an older gentleman. He's past the puppy nonsense.
He's not here to chew your baseboards, steal your shoes, or make poor decisions at 2 a.m. He's here for the retirement package:
Soft bed. Good snacks. Leisurely strolls. Someone to love. Possibly a recliner.

He had a home. He had a person. And through circumstances nobody could control, he lost both. We can't give Buddy his old life back.

But somebody can give this funny old man a wonderful next chapter.

Come meet Buddy. You bring the home. He'll bring the personality.

Not every volunteer at the shelter walks dogs, and that's okay!

When most people think about volunteering at an animal shelter, they picture walking dogs or cleaning kennels. While those roles are incredibly important, they're only part of what keeps a shelter running.

There are countless ways to make a difference, even if handling dogs isn't the right fit for you.

Some volunteers help by:

📸 Taking photos and videos of adoptable dogs.
💻 Sharing social media posts to help dogs reach more potential adopters.
🎪 Helping at community events and adoption events.
🎁 Organizing donations and supply drives.
🧺 Washing blankets, towels, and laundry.
✂️ Preparing enrichment toys and treat puzzles.
📦 Sorting supplies and stocking shelves.
📞 Assisting with administrative projects when needed.

Every one of these tasks helps our staff spend more time caring for the dogs.

Not everyone is comfortable around large dogs.
Not everyone can walk multiple dogs.
Not everyone wants to clean kennels.

And that's perfectly okay.

Animal shelters need people with all kinds of talents and interests. Whether you're creative, organized, outgoing, or simply have a few hours to spare each month, there's a way you can help.

At Giles County Animal Shelter, every volunteer plays an important role in giving stray dogs the best care possible while they wait for their forever homes.

Sometimes the biggest impact comes from behind the scenes. Every photo shared, every blanket folded, every donation sorted, and every event supported helps another dog get one step closer to a family of their own. 🐾

Some dogs arrive at the shelter and get names like Bella, Daisy, or Lucy.

And then there’s Chugga Chugga RuRu.

Now say it correctly.

Not “Chugga Chugga RuRu” like you’re reading attendance.

It’s “Chugga Chugga RUUUU-RUUUU!” in the cutest voice you can manage, followed by a small giggle.

If you didn’t giggle, you did it wrong. Start over.

RuRu is a female Beagle, and somewhere along the way we apparently lost the ability to give dogs normal government names.

Honestly, look at her.

That is not a Susan.

That is Chugga Chugga RuRu.

Being a Beagle, RuRu also comes equipped with the traditional Beagle operating system: two large ears that appear functional but are mostly for decoration, and one nose with full executive authority.

RuRu goes where the nose says RuRu goes.

You are welcome to call her “RuRu” for short.

We’ll know you’re taking the easy way out.

Her full legal name is Chugga Chugga RUUUU-RUUUU, and yes, the ridiculous voice is implied.

Meet Cal Naughton, Jr.

You Met Ricky Bobby.

Today, Ricky’s got his wingman.

“I’m the Magic Man. Now you see me… now you don’t.”

Which, for a shelter dog, is actually the entire goal here.

Now you don’t.

✨ Magic. ✨

Unlike the recent lineup of Frank Blueberry Sinatra, Livia, and Ricky Bobby, Cal does not have blue eyes.

We checked.

Apparently the Magic Man does not require special effects.

We’re not entirely sure what breed he is either. At this point, our breed-identification process consists mostly of staring at the dog for several seconds and saying:

“Huh.”

Then moving on.

Cal is sweet, handsome, funny, and ready for his own home.

And while Ricky Bobby may get all the glory, every Ricky needs a Cal.

Shake and Bake.

Ricky: “What does that do? Does that blow your mind?”

Cal: “That. Just. Happened.”

Black dogs are sometimes overlooked in shelters, but they deserve the same chance as every other dog.

Have you ever heard of "Black Dog Syndrome?"

It's a term that's been used in animal welfare to describe the observation that, in some shelters, black-coated dogs may spend longer waiting for adoption than dogs with lighter-colored coats. While research has found mixed results and not every shelter experiences this trend, one thing is certain:

A dog's coat color tells you nothing about who they are.

A black dog can be just as playful.
Just as loyal.
Just as gentle.
Just as goofy.
And just as deserving of a loving home.

At Giles County Animal Shelter, we encourage adopters to look beyond appearance.

Instead of choosing a dog based on color, take a few minutes to get to know their personality. You might discover a hiking buddy, a couch companion, a running partner, or a best friend you never expected.

Some of the most unforgettable dogs we've cared for have been solid black or mostly black. Their color wasn't what made them special, their hearts were.

The next time you visit a shelter, challenge yourself to spend a little extra time with the dogs you might normally walk past.

You may find that the perfect companion isn't the one that catches your eye first...
