Have you ever turned around with your dog's food bowl full of food, bent down to give it to your dog only to have them rush at the bowl causing it to spill…or worse, you dropped it making a huge mess? Or, has your dog ever rushed out the door before you wanted them to? I know we all have at some point in our pet ownership. Alas, there is a “cure” for these actions!
I call it “the wait”. I teach all my dogs the command “wait” because I got tired of cleaning up food bowl messes and the potential for my dog to run out of my door, or jump out of my truck door before I was ready or before it was safe. That one simple word, “wait”, could actually save the life of your dog one day. I think this is one of the most important things I have taught all my dogs. They have learned that I am the leader of the pack at all times, whether feeding, walking on leash, going outside, coming out of their crate calmly, or exiting my vehicle.
Teaching “wait” takes only a day or three of you being patient and calm with your dog, and it is so rewarding to see your dog look to you for guidance. When your dog realizes you are their leader and partner, it begins to grow the bond between owner and dog.
So, if you are tired of your dog rushing their actions, teach them “wait” and see how much less messy or stressed feeding time, or any other time can be.
I wrote this a couple weeks ago, but since then, I have thought about how i want my dogs to wait for my timing yet I am so impatient when it comes to waiting for God's timing for me. I need to be more like my dogs and wait for my master's timing. It is for my own good and much less messy than when done on my timing.
Psalm 130:5
“I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope;”
Psalm 46:10
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
Isaiah 40:31
“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”
Until next time,
