Pumpkin is usually shy and doesn’t say much when you enter The Catnip Hale. But this is her true demanding personality with a loud cry to go with it. She turns 18 this March and we’re grateful for every day with her.

Aloha kākou, I’m Jennifer. I’ve lived on Maui for over 22 years and The Catnip Hale is my dream that started during COVID. Alongside running my cat boarding business, I’m a special education teacher, and former veterinary technician, which gives me a calm, attentive, and compassionate approach to animal care.
In the photo, I’m holding Cookie, a Lahaina fire cat who escaped the Lahaina fires. Over the past two years, his story (and 27 others in my care from Lahaina) have deeply shaped my work, and I’ve been setting aside part of my business to support fire-affected cats, and most recently have joined the board of EACH (Emergency Animal Care & Help) nonprofit to help the overall welfare of Maui—its residents and the pets who love them.
If you board your cat with The Catnip Hale, part of your payment goes toward supporting firecats like Cookie who are indefinitely in my care until their families rebuild. Whether your cat is staying with me in their private bedroom for the first time or is a returning guest, I treat every cat as if they were my own, providing a safe, peaceful, and loving environment while you’re away. Thank you for helping me keep the dream alive! I look forward to seeing you and your kitties soon. Please reach out if you like a meet and greet and to see the rooms I have available. A Hui Ho!

Poor firecat Mr Grey has possibly FIC or idiopathic Cystitis. Idiopathic meaning “unknown causes”FIC is a catchall term to used to describe cases of lower urinary tract symptoms, which failed to confirm the cat has another disease. Cat suffering from FIC make frequent attempts to urinate probably as a result of bladder discomfort and often are found to have blood in their urine. It’s always considered an emergency if you have a male cat that is having difficulty urinating and there is blood in their urine so never assume that it is not crystals/stones that could cause a urinary blockage which is fatal.. i have two clients so far who have lost their male cats from urinary blockage and a handful of other clients who came close. Always get them checked within 24-48 hours of onset of blood and trouble peeing. It can be an emergency and there is no way to tell without a vet checking them out.
Stress seems to be an important factor in the development of FIC. This is the second time. Mr. Gray has developed symptoms since he has stayed at the Catnip Hale for the last two years while his family rebuilds their home in Lahaina. I was beating myself up with guilt wondering what it was… moving rooms? Something I changed in his environment? Could he have PTSD symptoms potentially from the fire that connects with any change? That’s quite possible. The vet mentioned she’s seen an uptick of stress related symptoms following the new year. the New Year festivities continue to have latent consequences on our pets. I’m guessing this could be the culprit since Grey’s last episode was after the 4th of july. I believe Mr Grey knows I’m doing everything right in my power and sometimes it’s just out of our control. Fireworks be damned. Please comment if you’ve had stress related symptoms with your cats since the new year. I’d be curious to know how many Maui Cat parents are dealing with similar scenarios.

This is the position I was in to ring in the new year- with a cat in between my knees and creating a “Thunder Vest” with my body. This was one of my clients at The Catnip Hale Maui that I knew was connected to his owner and had anxiety. I ran around doing triage for 22 cats and ended up with Kai. Besides his prescribed meds, we had music going, feliway and lots of hiding spots. Each animal reacts different. Kai was able to get out from under me but preferred to stay. But after this night, Kai came out for breakfast from his hiding place to greet me for the first time in 3 weeks that he’s been here with his siblings. I guess we “trauma bonded!” All was well about 30 minutes later and no booms since then. I’ll be preparing to do the rounds once the evening comes.
