Today we’re celebrating one of nature’s most fascinating and ancient creatures—the turtle! World Turtle Day is observed every year on May 23rd to help raise awareness and protection for turtles and tortoises around the world. These amazing reptiles have been around for over 200 million years—even before dinosaurs! 🦖
Here are some fun turtle facts to make your day a little shell-abration-worthy:
✨ Some turtles can live for over 100 years
✨ Sea turtles use Earth’s magnetic field to navigate across entire oceans
✨ A turtle’s shell is actually part of its skeleton (it grows with them!)
✨ There are over 350 species of turtles and tortoises worldwide
✨ Baby turtles are called “hatchlings” and make an incredible journey to the ocean right after birth
Unfortunately, many turtle species are threatened due to habitat loss, pollution, and illegal wildlife trade. Even small actions—like reducing plastic use and protecting natural habitats—can make a big difference in their survival. 🌿
