Dallas Highway Animal Hospital

Dallas Highway Animal Hospital Veterinarians In order for pet health care to be truly comprehensive, treatment must consist of more than a diagnosis and a standardized procedure.

At Dallas Highway Animal Hospital (DHAH), we believe every pet's wellness starts with a program, founded in prevention, and personalized to his or her breed, age, and lifestyle. The personal treatment at DHAH doesn't stop with your pet. You, as the owner, are responsible for his or her vitality, so it's imperative that your lifestyle becomes part of the equation.

November is National Senior Pet Month, and it is one of our favorite times of the year. Thanks to modern veterinary medicine, our pets are living longer, healthier lives than ever before. As they age, they count on us to help them stay comfortable, happy, and well cared for.
Many pets enter their senior years earlier than people expect. Most cats become seniors around eight to ten years of age. Smaller dogs usually reach their senior years around eight. Larger dogs often reach this stage as early as six. Every pet ages a little differently, but paying attention to small changes can make a big difference.
Senior pets sometimes need extra checkups so we can watch for early signs of conditions such as arthritis, dental disease, kidney or liver changes, heart disease, lumps and bumps, or cognitive decline. These issues are common, but they are also manageable when caught early. If you notice limping, changes in appetite, accidents in the house, coughing, vomiting, or a drop in energy, let us know. These things are not just “old age.” They are our pets’ way of asking for help.
There are many simple ways to support your senior pet at home. Soft, supportive bedding can make resting easier. Rugs or non-slip runners help older dogs who struggle on hardwood floors. Ramps or steady steps can help both dogs and cats reach their favorite spots. Shallow litter boxes help senior cats who have trouble climbing in and out. Regular nail trims and gentle brushing keep them clean and comfortable.
One of the most important things you can do is stay ahead of your pet’s needs. Ask us about tools, treatments, and lifestyle adjustments that can help with pain control, mobility, and day-to-day comfort. And if you are starting to think about long-term quality of life planning, we are here to guide you with compassion and honesty.
Senior pets give us years of unconditional love. This month is a perfect reminder to give them the extra attention, comfort, and care they deserve.
If your senior pet has not had a checkup in the past year, now is a wonderful time to schedule one. We look forward to helping you make their golden years truly golden.
