If your personal protection dog is too busy being scared of the world around him then he cant protect you. (In this video you see the progression of several reps of a young doberman that has never seen this before. He gets better and better each rep until he is confident enough to blast through to the decoy.) This is why we do so much environmental training with different challenges to build him up. Here at K9 OTC we challenge the dogs with different things they have never seen before, allowing them a good experience and a win to build his confidence. If the dog only listens to the trainer, the work is not finished.

Personal protection training also requires the owner to practice clear commands, leash handling, recalls, releases and calm management after activity. If a spouse, adult family member or caretaker will regularly walk or transport the dog, that person may need instruction too.

Before choosing a program, ask how skills will be transferred from the trainer to the people responsible for the dog at home and in public. The goal is not simply a trained response—it is a response the handler can safely direct and end.

Ask how owner practice is built into the training plan.

Some of the best learning happens outside the classroom. 🍂

Fall weather makes outdoor sessions like this one even better, and group work is where dogs learn to focus even with other dogs, new people, and plenty of distractions around them. A Doberman holding a calm heel next to a neighbor's dog does not happen by luck. It happens through consistent dog training and a handler who knows what they are doing.

Before choosing a personal protection dog trainer, look past the dramatic demonstration.

Ask how the trainer builds obedience under distraction, evaluates the individual dog’s temperament, teaches a reliable recall or release, and prepares you to handle the dog in everyday situations. Distance comes before obedience when a dog starts to fixate.

If you notice a fixed stare, closed mouth, forward weight shift, or stiff posture, do not wait for the barking and lunging to begin. Cross the street, make a smooth turn, step behind a parked vehicle, or move into an open area.

Once your dog has enough space, ask for a simple behavior the dog already knows, such as turning with you or making brief eye contact. If the dog cannot take food or acknowledge you, the situation is probably still too difficult. Keep moving away instead of trying to win an obedience contest beside the trigger.
