Our third, and final, nurse shark of the day was another beauty. It was awesome to watch the team working together to accomplish their work, take care of the shark and teach students all while maintaining a safe environment for everyone. Pictures all courtesy of Field School.

Our next catch was another of the three nurse sharks of the day. While nurse sharks have a reputations as being big puppies, they still put up a fight coming in. This big nurse got the same work-up as our first. The students rotate which tasks they perform so they maximize their chance to practice all of the skills they learned about in lecture. Check out the beautiful closeup of our nurse shark's skin.

Not a shark, but sometimes we even catch a bony fish. In this case we caught a large snapper. We still took measurements and checked for parasites before returning the fish to Biscayne Bay.

Here are some more shots from the lemon shark (Rich's favorite from this trip). The students took measurements, blood samples tissue samples and inserted a streamer tag before sending our lemon shark friend on its way.

Our second catch was a lemon shark. This was the first time in several years that Dr. Shiffman was present for a lemon shark! During work-ups water is pumped over the shark's gills to ensure they have adequate oxygen. Students and crew took fork length, total length and girth. The crew sampled the lemon shark's eye to look at bacterial populations as part of a study to determine the cause of lemon shark eye issues in Biscayne Bay. They also sampled the lemon's cloaca to gather samples for an E-DNA study of lemon shark diets.

Our first catch was an 8' nurse shark! The crew and students worked together to safely restrain the shark, take measurements and samples and tag the shark before release. During the work-up a team member logs all of the observations and data and keeps a time from when the shark is brought onto the boat to when it is released. Students gain invaluable experience working around large fish and performing different sampling techniques in a real-world situation. Although guests weren't permitted to get their hands on, it was still wonderful to see the sharks up close and to watch the students' faces light up as they completed their tasks! *all photos are courtesy of Field School.

Guests and the professor were included in deploying and retrieving gear. Here Rich and Dr. David Shiffman, Rich's intern years ago, deploy drum rig #6 on the first set. First the hook and bait are tossed out and the leader fed out so the leader doesn't tangle. Next the drum is set into the water and it starts taking out line to the float. Then the float is sent over the side.

Here are a few shots of the crew and students deploying the fishing gear. We used "drums" with 50' lengths of 800 # monofilament with circle hooks and steel leaders. Ten drums were set in a line in a predetermined location. By the time the last one was deployed we had a little time to cruise back to the first one before we had to retrieve, process any shark caught, rebait the hook and re-deploy in the proper spot. The crew were all very professional and helpful.

On our way out to Biscayne Bay for our day of shark research. We had beautiful weather with just enough clouds to keep us from cooking on deck. This is the view of Miami from the stern of R/V Garvin as we were cruising out to deploy our gear to catch sharks. Check back for some great action shots and a few sharks!🦈
