Guests and the professor were included in deploying and retrieving gear. Here Rich and Dr. David Shiffman, Rich's intern years ago, deploy drum rig #6 on the first set. First the hook and bait are tossed out and the leader fed out so the leader doesn't tangle. Next the drum is set into the water and it starts taking out line to the float. Then the float is sent over the side.

Here are a few shots of the crew and students deploying the fishing gear. We used "drums" with 50' lengths of 800 # monofilament with circle hooks and steel leaders. Ten drums were set in a line in a predetermined location. By the time the last one was deployed we had a little time to cruise back to the first one before we had to retrieve, process any shark caught, rebait the hook and re-deploy in the proper spot. The crew were all very professional and helpful.

On our way out to Biscayne Bay for our day of shark research. We had beautiful weather with just enough clouds to keep us from cooking on deck. This is the view of Miami from the stern of R/V Garvin as we were cruising out to deploy our gear to catch sharks. Check back for some great action shots and a few sharks!🦈

Awesome day of shark research in Miami! Pictures from the actual work will have to wait a bit as we weren't allowed to photo during the work. But 3 nurse sharks, a lemon and a blacknose is a pretty darn great day!

We're excited to announce that, as part of our commitment to conservation and research, Rich will be spending a day on the water with a grad level Nova Southeastern University shark field research skills course taught by our friend David Whysharksmatter Shiffman! This is a great opportunity for us to show the positive impacts of our clients' ongoing patronage.​ And we're excited to support budding shark scientists that are the future of our understanding of shark biology and human impacts on them. Check back next week for an update (and hopefully some sharky pictures) from the trip!

A little later than it should have been, so please give a loud welcome to our newest Aquarium Technician trainee Christine! Christine has a background in both veterinary medicine and professional animal care. Her enthusiasm and desire to learn will make her a great asset to our team and our clients. In her spare time she's also lead singer in a band! Welcome Christine!

Slipper lobsters can make an interesting addition to reef aquariums. They're not as predatory as some of the true lobsters and they help agitate substrate. This guy is just settling into a client's aquarium.

We are equally thrilled to introduce everyone to our new employee, Hannah! Hannah comes to us from the pet industry and also holds a Bachelor's degree. She keeps fish at home in addition to her dog and cats - an animal lover like the rest of us. Hannah loves learning new things and meeting new people. She enjoys the problem-solving side of aquariums. And Hannah's retail experience has also developed great customer service skills. So we know our clients are going to look forward to her visits to their homes and offices.
