It’s a T.-riffic day to get prehistoric! That’s because June 1 is Dinosaur Day. The word dinosaur was coined in 1842 and comes from a combination of two Greek words – deinos, meaning “fearfully great,” and sauros, meaning “lizard.” Dinosaur fossils have been found on all seven continents.

From Triceratops to T. rex, more than 30 different animatronic dinosaurs are on display throughout the Zoo as part of Dinosaurs! at the Zoo. Like the terrible lizards, this exhibition’s time is limited. See them now through September 7.

Happy World Sea Lion Day! Did you know these incredible animals are pinnipeds, which is a word derived from Latin. “Pinna” means wing or feather, and “pedis” means foot.

California sea lions are one of the noisiest pinniped species. They spend a lot of time communicating with one another using alarm barks, growls, bleats, and roars. They use vocalizations both on land and in water. Visit the Zoo to see and hear our California sea lion colony at the Water’s Edge. Plan your visit here: https://ow.ly/ih1o50Z5NCG

Our flora and fauna were on full display for a Morning at the Zoo! Gardening and nature enthusiasts had the opportunity to tour the plants and greenery during a walking tour with Joe Williams, our Curator of Horticulture and Grounds.

In addition to learning about the role these plants play in our ecosystem, guests also heard about how their legacy can create a brighter future for wildlife and communities around the world. To learn more about making a legacy gift to the Zoo, visit: https://ow.ly/ChSr50Z5FHq

Today, we honor a pioneer in biology, conservation, and environmental activism. She also happens to be a Pittsburgher. Rachel Carson was born in Springdale, Pennsylvania, on May 27, 1907.

Carson was a leading voice in bringing worldwide awareness to the dangers of environmental pollution. She studied biology at Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham University), John Hopkins University, and the University of Maryland. In 1935, she started working at the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries, the modern-day U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It was there that Carson’s love of writing and biology came together in the form of brochures, radio programs, and more. Her most influential and well-known work is “Silent Spring,” which was one of the first to warn Americans against the “indiscriminate use” of chemical pesticides. Before her death in 1964, Carson told a good friend that she would also like to be remembered for her love of the sea.

We honor Carson on what would have been her birthday for her groundbreaking work in global environmental and conservation movements.

This is a day like no otter! We’re celebrating World Otter Day at the Zoo and have some otterly interesting facts you should know about these amazing animals.

The Zoo is home to two sea otters – Alki and Meshik. Sea otters are coastal marine mammals, have the world’s thickest fur, and live almost exclusively in the water. They eat a diet of sea urchins, crabs, and other shellfish.

You can also see Oakley and Sq**rt, the river otters, here at the Zoo. The North American river otter hunts for food in both freshwater and saltwater. They dine on fish, crabs, frogs, birds’ eggs, and some reptiles. They are known for their playfulness and can run at speeds up to 15 miles an hour.

Make sure to check out our otterly awesome friends next time you’re at the Zoo. Thank you to World Otter Day Presenting Sponsor J&A: Plumbing, Heating, Cooling and Electric!
