If you can't adopt for a long time, foster for a short time! These dogs need a vacation from shelter life so their true personalities can thrive. Even just a few weeks in a home can dramatically improve a dog's mental health, and you can help find their forever home.

You don't need to adopt to change a dog's life. We can provide food and other essentials! Learn more about fostering and sign up at Maricopa.gov/FosterPets.

73 dogs came into the shelter yesterday. 🚨While we are so grateful for all the adoptions we saw last month, we still need the community's support to make sure their pets don't end up being in these photos. Please microchip your pets and keep them up to date.

If you believe any of these pets are yours, come to the shelter listed in the graphic to pick up your pet. We don't want to find homes for pets who already have one! Even if your lost pet is not shown here, we urge anyone looking for their dog to come to MCACC. Our Lost & Found department can help you fill out a Lost Pet Report.

Some of our dogs had a Labor Day weekend filled with adventure! Tails Around Town is a great way to make a shelter dog's day for those who don't have the time to volunteer. You don't need to bring anything - we have leashes, harnesses, and a backpack filled with items for your day trip!

All of the dogs featured here are available for adoption. They're tried, tested, and ready for forever homes!

Update: Adopted!

Hank's story is sad, but we know a happy ending is out there for him. One of our field officers found him digging through trash for food at the only gas station in Aguila, AZ. A worker told our officer that he had been living at the gas station for several weeks with another dog, but his dog friend was hit and killed on the highway, leaving him all alone.

When our field officer scanned his microchip, his information came back to a rescue in the area. They provided Hank's old adopter with all the information needed to pick him up. That was on June 21. It is now September 2, and no one has come for him.

Hank hasn't had a single meet and greet, but he's smart, social, playful, and well-behaved. He's gone on doggy field trips and has been a dream! According to one man who took him out, "He is just about perfect."

Hank is eligible for foster, and his adoption fee is $0 since he has been at the shelter for more than 60 days. Adopt him at the East shelter: https://apps.pets.maricopa.gov/adoptPets/Home/Details/A5146746

Update: Adopted!!

Bambi would like to remind everyone that adoption fees for ALL dogs that have been at the shelter longer than 60 days are $0 - the spay/neuter, vaccines and microchip are all covered!

Bambi is one of our 60+ day residents. She’s a playgroup rockstar and loves meeting other pups at the shelter, but despite her sweet demeanor, her meet-and-greets have not worked out. She is bubbly and high-energy, so she’d love a home that can give her plenty of exercise and stimulation.

Bambi can sit, shake, and fetch. Just watch out - she’s a runner and can jump fences, so keep that leash on outside!

This sweet, social lady is available for adoption at the East shelter: https://apps.pets.maricopa.gov/adoptPets/Home/Details/A4727728

✨ Friday Foster Feature ✨

Ryder's transformation from a shelter longtimer to the perfect foster dog needs to be shared! For three long months, Ryder watched potential adopters walk by without giving him a chance. Brown pit bulls are very common at the shelter, and despite his wiggly, happy personality, he was overlooked time and time again. One fateful day, a foster finally chose him. Here's how it's going:

"He is a sweetheart and is a very wiggly, happy boy. Ryder has met many dogs and is very dog friendly. We introduced him to a cat while he was on a leash and he seemed interested. I think he could learn to live with a cat. He is responding really well to training and boundaries. He is so good in his crate when we leave him alone....Ryder would be an amazing family dog. He just wants to be part of the pack!"

Ryder's journey isn't over! He still needs a forever home. Help us find his family. Email [email protected] to set up a meet and greet: https://apps.pets.maricopa.gov/adoptPets/Home/Details/A5136144

We're partnering with MetLife Pet Insurance to give a month of pet insurance to new adopters at no cost! 🎉 Thanks to an agreement approved by the Board of Supervisors last week, our adopters can have some peace of mind by getting extra protection for their pet during those important first weeks at home.

Anyone who has adopted from MCACC since Saturday, Aug. 23 can receive instructions on activating their policy. This information will now be provided during the adoption process, but if you’ve already taken your new pet home, please DM us and we’ll send it to you.

We are thankful to MetLife for making this possible! Learn more about adopting at Maricopa.gov/Pets.

In Maricopa County, MCACC is responsible for handling dog and cat bite cases. This is how we met Hot Wheels. Hot Wheels was found stuck inside a car engine and in a moment of crisis, bit the closest large, scary hand he could find. Unfortunately, that hand belonged to a firefighter who was trying to rescue him.

Hot Wheels has been in a 10-day timeout - AKA bite quarantine - to make sure he didn't have rabies. Now, he's cleared, a brand new cat, and ready to find a home!

To adopt Hot Wheels, visit the West shelter. No appointment needed: https://apps.pets.maricopa.gov/adoptPets/Home/Details/A5149714

1,716 days. That's how long Sparky was missing. When he disappeared in 2020, his family put up flyers in hopes he would find his way back to them. He was found this weekend running loose in a neighborhood just FIVE minutes away from his original family's house!

Thanks to a microchip scan, we were able to get into contact with the owner's daughter, who is turning 15 and is thrilled to celebrate her quinceañera with him. When the father saw Sparky in his kennel, the lost pup appeared to recognize him and gave him the classic husky howl. The whole family is thrilled to have him home. 💙

Pet owners, please keep microchips up to date! A microchip is one of the most effective ways to reunite lost pets with their owners. We also offer chips for $25 at our East and West shelters during our business hours, no appointment required. Learn more at Maricopa.gov/Pets.

Come take a shelter dog on a field trip for a day! If you're not in the mood to go outside in this weather, you're free to let them relax in the comfort of your home. Grin had a great time watching kittens at PetSmart and cuddling on the couch last weekend.

"Once in the house, he is a PERFECT house guest. He explored and sniffed, and quickly relaxed and became the best cuddle buddy. Grin enjoyed a long nap on the rug, eventually moving up to the couch for snuggles from my mother. His entire energy changed in a home -- he was relaxed, sweet, super snuggly and calm. He had his playful moments too, so we took him out to Petsmart to pick out some toys."

The high-energy Grin transformed into the sweetest, calmest boy after just a few hours in a home! That's the power of a Tails Around Town trip.
