Founded in 1991, Redwings Horse Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to ending the cycle of abuse, neglect, and slaughter of horses, ponies, donkeys, mules, and burros. What began as a small rescue effort in Carmel, California, has grown into a nationally rec

ognized sanctuary where more than 80 equines live in safety, health, and peace. At Redwings, every horse has a story — some rescued from neglect, others saved from the slaughter pipeline, and many who simply needed a place to heal and be loved. Our mission is not only to rescue and rehabilitate but also to educate and inspire compassion through community outreach and educational programs that help prevent future suffering. Redwings is proud to be accredited by GFAS (Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries), CARMA (California Retirement Management Account), and TAA (Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance), and to collaborate with organizations committed to responsible equine welfare. Many of our residents will live out their days at the sanctuary, while others are carefully prepared for adoption into loving, permanent homes. Each successful adoption opens space for another horse in need — giving even more equines the chance to find safety, care, and love. Today, Redwings continues to stand as a symbol of hope, healing, and second chances — where every horse’s journey reminds us that love and compassion can change everything.

There is something so special about the friendships that form here.

Uncle Buck and our wonderful volunteer Dawn have spent many quiet moments together, and sometimes those are the moments that mean the most.

A gentle touch. A familiar voice. Someone who comes back week after week simply because they care.

Horses remember kindness, and over time, trust turns into connection.

For horses who have lived so many different lives before finding their way to Redwings, having people who continue to show up for them is a beautiful thing.

This is sanctuary too. Not just a safe place to land, but a place to be known, cared for, and loved.

Thank you, Dawn, and all of our incredible volunteers, for giving our horses so much of your hearts.

Because every horse deserves another chance.

Some stories remind us exactly why rescue matters.

Magic was one of six equines Redwings rescued from a Texas slaughter auction just days before they were scheduled to ship. We were told his family loved him but could no longer afford to care for him. Through no fault of his own, his future had become uncertain.

When Magic arrived at Redwings, he needed hoof and dental care, treatment for eye and respiratory infections, and, most importantly, the chance to simply be a horse again.

This is why we do what we do.

Rescue is only the beginning. Every horse deserves the opportunity to heal, to be loved, and to find the future they were always meant to have. While some horses will spend the rest of their lives at Redwings, others, like Magic, go on to find families of their own.

Magic found his forever home, where he'll spend his days surrounded by the love, care, and security every horse deserves.

Happy trails, Magic. You will always be loved.

There are some stories you never forget.

Camille was only two years old when she arrived at Redwings. She had known neglect long before she had the chance to simply be a horse.

Rescued from a Northern California hoarding case, Camille was heartbreakingly thin and desperately ill. She spent two weeks in the hospital fighting a severe sand impaction before she was finally strong enough to come home to Redwings.

Today, that frightened young mare is healthy, beautiful, and finally living the life every horse deserves.

The greatest transformations don't happen overnight. They happen one meal, one kind hand, one veterinary visit, and one day at a time.

Camille's story is a reminder that hope is real, healing is possible, and every horse deserves the chance to write a new chapter.

✨ Join us as we celebrate 35 years of stories just like Camille's at the Redwings Horse Sanctuary 35th Anniversary Benefit Gala.

Some horses have a remarkable way of changing the lives of the people they meet. Sonny has been doing just that for nearly two decades.

Born on July 4, 1997, Sonny was later donated to Partners in Equestrian Therapy, where his quiet temperament made him an ideal therapy horse.

For nearly 20 years, Sonny helped teach children and adults with disabilities how to ride. But what he gave his riders went far beyond the saddle. Through their time with Sonny, they found happiness, built confidence, and gained greater independence.

When it was finally time for Sonny to retire from riding lessons, Partners in Equestrian Therapy wanted to ensure he had the very best future and reached out to Redwings.

And it turns out Sonny isn't quite finished helping people yet.

Now 29 years young, Sonny is beginning a new chapter at Redwings as part of our Equine Assisted Services program. While his days of teaching people to ride may be behind him, his gentle nature and years of experience make him uniquely suited to continue connecting with people in a meaningful way.

After a lifetime of service, Sonny could simply enjoy retirement. Instead, this very special horse still has more to give, just in a different way.

We're incredibly grateful to have him as part of the Redwings family and can't wait to see the lives he'll continue to touch in this next chapter. 🐴❤️

Sometimes, rescue begins with a phone call.

In the fall of 2022, Santa Clara Animal Services received a report about a herd of horses being neglected. When Humane Officers arrived, they found six horses who were thin and badly in need of hoof and dental care.

After the owner failed to comply with instructions to improve their care, the horses were seized. Flynn was among those in the most critical condition, with a body condition score of just 1.

Because of the ongoing case against their former owner, the horses remained in the care of Animal Services for several months. Once the District Attorney released them, Redwings was contacted, and Flynn, along with Ethan, Freyja, and Nonnie, made the journey to our sanctuary.

For Flynn, arriving at Redwings meant the beginning of a very different life, one with proper nutrition, veterinary and farrier care, patience, compassion, and the time he needed to recover.

Watching Flynn today is a powerful reminder of just how much can change when a horse is given the care and second chance they deserve. ❤️

For 35 years, Redwings has been there for horses like Flynn, and this October, we're coming together to celebrate that legacy and help make sure we can continue being there when the next call comes.

🐴 Join us Saturday, October 17, for the Redwings Horse Sanctuary 35th Anniversary Benefit Gala at the Paso Robles Event Center, featuring a live demonstration with Warwick Schiller and a Redwings horse, dinner, live music, auctions, and an evening celebrating 35 years of rescue and sanctuary.
