🚨URGENT: Cheddar Bay Biscuit is back in the ER and fighting - we need your help! 🚨
Cheddar Bay Biscuit (“Biscuit”) joined AARF in March, a 10 year old distinguished fella who was brought into BARCS after his owner needed to go into a nursing home. It was discovered that he had untreated diabetes at that time, and after a couple of nights in the ER, was stabilized, and has since been looking for his forever home.
This past Saturday morning, however, his foster discovered that he could not balance or stand. Taken to the ER, he was immediately admitted with an extremely high white blood count of 35k. Though lethargic with high blood pressure and a low heart rate, they couldn’t immediately determine a cause for his sudden decline and he was put on an IV with fluids, insulin, and antibiotics.
By Sunday, it was determined that he had a UTI and Diabetic ketoacidosis (not enough insulin in the body to control glucose levels). While he began responding favorably to insulin, he refused to eat. This put us in a challenging position - if by this morning, he was still unable to eat or stand, would he have a real shot at survival? We knew that his overnight progress was going to be critical to determining a path forward.
This morning, we braced ourselves for a call from the vet.
At 8am we were told he still hadn’t eaten, but was “brighter” - meaning a bit of his grumpy old man self was coming back.
Midday, an ultrasound was conducted that showed he also had a suspected gallbladder infection. This explained why he went downhill so fast, but even still, not eating presented limited options forward.
..At 5pm tonight, the vet called us: Cheddar Bay Biscuit was eating!
He is still hospitalized, but we are hopefully that if he continues to show progress, he’ll be discharged tomorrow.
🚨Our LOW end ER estimate is $4,000. When an animal is welcomed to AARF, we make the same care decisions we would make for our personal pets. CBB is still fighting, and therefore, we will too - because he deserves to be a grumpy old man, in with a brand new start in a new home. Can you help?🚨
