Yes, pigs need veterinarians too! 🐷

Most people associate veterinary medicine with dogs and cats, but we care for many different species—including pigs.

As more people create hobby farms and animal sanctuaries, animals that were once thought of primarily as food are increasingly being cared for as individuals with their own needs and personalities.

And pigs are pretty amazing animals:

🐽 Pigs are incredibly intelligent. Studies have shown they can solve puzzles, learn commands, and even play simple video games.

🌿 They’re naturally very clean animals. When given enough space, pigs will choose separate areas for sleeping and for using the bathroom.

💞 Pigs are deeply social. They form strong bonds with other pigs and with the humans who care for them.

Today’s patient is having a routine neuter, an important procedure for health, behavior, and population management.

Veterinary medicine isn’t just about dogs and cats—it’s about caring for animals of all kinds.

Here are some compassionate reasons families choose at-home euthanasia:

• Comfort & familiarity – Your pet can rest in their favorite spot, surrounded by familiar smells, sounds, and the people they love.
• Less stress & anxiety – No car rides, waiting rooms, or clinical environments that may cause fear or discomfort.
• Peaceful, unhurried goodbye – You can take your time, say everything you need to say, and grieve without feeling rushed.
• Privacy for your family – An intimate setting allows for quiet moments, prayer, music, or rituals that feel meaningful to you.
• More control over the environment – Soft blankets, natural light, favorite toys — you can create a calm, loving atmosphere.
• Support in your own space – Guidance and compassion are brought directly to you, so you don’t have to navigate this alone.
Every family and every pet is different, but for many, home provides the most gentle and loving setting for their final moments. 🤍🐾

Meet Dr. Teresa Schumacher - Veterinarian and Co-Founder of Aluna!

Dr. Schumacher has 10+ years of experience in emergency and critical care medicine, and has worked at multiple specialty clinics around the country since completing her education at the University of California, Davis and a rotating internship in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

As rewarding as her career in the ER has been, her experiences have opened her eyes to many areas in which veterinary medicine could improve, and ultimately led her to create a company that bridges these gaps in care.

When it comes to clinical practice, she is a strong believer that the veterinary oath should extend to all animals, regardless of background, ownership, economic status, or location, and that veterinarians hold a responsibility to not only care for animals but also to educate the general public on all matters of animal health and well-being. She is a proponent of animal adoption and an outspoken advocate against backyard breeding and animal cruelty.

Dr. Schumacher’s passion lies not only in helping individual patients, but also in practicing medicine in a way that takes into account the health of people, other animals (including wildlife), and the planet we call home. She utilizes this One Health Approach in every aspect of Aluna Veterinary Services’ day to day business practices.

Dr. Schumacher has big dreams for Aluna Veterinary Services, but she also believes that a strong sense of local community is the foundation for success. Therefore she has strategically started small, building Aluna’s clientele one visit, one patient, one healthy outcome at a time.
