whether it is friendly play or not, if I want their attention I expect to get it & I will follow through in order to maintain that expectation
Two reasons I stopped the play
1-the leash was getting tangled because snoopy was playing so submissively that he was rolling it around himself (on of the potential downsides of the long line)
2-Zeus did not pause when I called for his attention, he was checked out & too aroused by the interaction
If this was not their first time playing, I could let it go…maybe. But with this being snoop & zeus first time playing, I want to be on the more careful side
That being said, if I was being the most careful I could be I would have introduced Zeus to this situation differently
We always have next time & this is why the long line is my favorite tool. The one downside is that it has the potential to get tangled, which in this case, I did not want that potential to cause restriction that could result in fear HOWEVER the sense of security the long line provides outweighs the downsides & I will always opt to use it vs not.

Ultimately I could have let it go, let it slide, but whether my dogs are playing or sniffing something interesting, when call them off-I need that disengage.
Order of operations when introducing dogs into the pack setting , whether friends or not- bring out on the ling line. Walk around until the become disinterested in the other Dog or are no longer fixated. The Dog on the long line will start to sniff the ground & give “check ins”
That is the proper behavior to reward & an appropriate time to let the leash go-NOT at the height of arousal
All this to say, the long line in this instance, while getting tangled, is what gave me the ability to stay calm in my approach & follow through with bringing the energy down

Slow & steady wins the race. There is absolutely no rush for these two to become best friends or start snuggling. The main thing I want to preserve is, for Zoe, a sense of security and safety under my direction & for Snoopy to continue to blossom into the gentle giant he is.
Zoe learns to open up, makes more friends, trusts me more
Snoopy trusts me more because I give him safe new experiences, give him more friends & help him to feel mentally fulfilled
