I’ll admit it — I haven’t always done this.
For years, “he’s always been sound” felt like pretty good information to have.
But the longer I’ve been in this business, the more I’ve realized:
Sound today and clean X-rays are two very different things.
It’s not about whether you trust the person selling the horse. Most of the time, they may genuinely have no idea there’s anything there.
Because none of us have X-ray vision and horses can hide things.
So somewhere along the way, I changed my standard.
Now we X-ray every horse before we ever offer them for sale.
And if they don’t pass our standard? You never see them listed.
I’d rather spend the money and find out myself than let a buyer fall in love, pay for a PPE, and be the one to find it.
I didn’t always do it this way.
But now I can’t imagine doing it any other way.
Should this eventually become standard in the horse business? 👀
