You can build a better understanding of how a horse rides by the tracks and hoof prints it is leaving in the arena. If a horse is heavy on the front end they will often drag a front foot in the sand while backing, if a horse is sitting on their hips in the stop you can look back and see the skid marks, can you tell by the hole drilled into the ground and the hoof prints what maneuver was completed? Trainers challenge:

From the time we start handling our horses so much of their training is about the position of their feet. Can you see in the photo how this horse is positioning his feet for his next step? In order to stay in the box and continue the turn the outside front foot must cross over the other. At the same time the inside hind foot must act as the pivot foot occasionally stepping forward as the outside hind foot steps around.

For this week’s challenge can you get your horse to cross their front feet over the other while they are turning? Like this post if you’re willing to give it a try!

Did you know that we can learn a lot about a horse by the inside of their mouth? A horse with a shorter mouth often has more feel in the reins. A horse that has a low roof of the mouth is often more sensitive to the bit. Can you see the low roof in the photo below? A horse with an adequate sized tongue that lays between the jaw bones may ride differently than a horse with a larger tongue, this also makes a big difference in the bits we use. While some horses naturally handle the basic snaffle, Mullen mouths, etc. other horses depending on the conformation of their mouth may require a bit with a little more shape or a little more relief. Checking a horses teeth is one of the first things we want to do with a new horse and a simple way to know if their is an issue or if dental work is required.

By knowing what the inside of your horses mouth looks like it helps take the guesswork out of their training, ensuring them a more comfortable experience.

Did you know that a horse salivating to the bit is in a relaxed mental state? We use two types of bits with our horses, a sweet iron bit often with a copper inlay or a solid copper mouthpiece. Both of these metals encourage a light salivation making the horse’s mouth lubricated and more comfortable.

Get them loping! While we take our time with our horses we still want to make sure they are advancing. For us this means as soon as the horse is relaxed at the walk, relaxed at the trot, then we must pick up the next gate.
Did you know that horses are the most relaxed while loping? The sooner we get them loping the less issues we will have with their training. Remember when loping your horse to think about elevating yourself and elevating your horse…..up and forward!🤠

We have always loved the quote “Progress not perfection”! When working with our horses we want to focus on the progress, sometimes we may have to skip what we had planned and work on something completely different to help the horse relax but most times we choose one movement to make a little smoother, a little softer, a little faster, or a little better. It is important that we remember to be patient and be consistent, after all at the end of the the day it is up to us to bring all those small lessons together to make a quality riding horse.
