Same as the stone fruit, we bought a watermelon 🍉 with high hopes of an early season win, alas, it was bland and boring 🥱 Fed it to the worms! 🪱

What’s the smallest volume a compost pile needs to be to get “hot”?

Google it and you’ll get, > 1 cubic yard (~200 gallons) - that’s a big pile! My tumbler bin is hot, after a few days, and only 15 gallons of pre-compost! I think that is very efficient! But, it’s not quite hot enough. Last I saw, it peaked at 122° F - Hot compost is closer to 130°F - 150°F (54°C – 66°C) I need more heat to kill pathogens and destroy any seeds in there.

How do you add extra heat to your bin? 🔥

Fish Hydrolysate- is a cold processed fish product. It uses natural enzymes, bacteria, and fungus to decompose and breakdown the entire fish carcass. Head, bones, and all. The result, is a bioactive fish fertilizer that your soil and plants crave! When I choose to dispatch a fish and eat the fillets, I feel ethically obligated to use the carcass as well.

Fishing might be my favorite past time. My family enjoys eating the meat from the fish I catch and ethically, I choose to use everything the fish provides us, including its carcass.

What bedding do you use for your worms? I use a 25 page shredder to shred clean boxes into little pieces. I sit down once a week (before trash day) and shred all our boxes from the week and store the shreds in trash bags.
