Do you know about the statewide Master Gardener Program?
It's best known for providing a help line to gardeners to ask ANY(!) question, at no charge. But they do so much more:
"extend research-based knowledge and information on home horticulture, pest management, and sustainable landscape practices to the residents of California and be guided by our core values and
strategic initiatives."
All this is provided as a service by the various counties, University of California Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and thousands of volunteers. Today is a fundraising day!
"Today is UC ANR’s inaugural Big Dig Day and with your help we know we will and reach our goal to support work for a healthier California!"

"Together, we are growing healthier gardens and more sustainable landscapes for future generations. The UC Master Gardener Program plays an important role in:
* safeguarding water quality, quantity and security by reducing unnecessary pesticide use, promoting integrated pest management strategies and encouraging efficient water use
* enhancing local sustainable food systems for families an, neighborhoods and communities through community, school and demonstration gardens
* detecting and managing invasive and endemic species, as well as preventing their introduction, through education
* supporting healthy families and communities through science literacy and outdoor activity
It’s the generosity of individuals and volunteers like you that support our efforts to meet California’s toughest challenges. An investment in the UC Master Gardener Program represents an investment in California's present and future."
