We want to send a special shout out to our wonderful CSA volunteers. You're the heart of this program and we're truly grateful for your dedication. We couldn’t do it without you. Our community supported agriculture (CSA) program is truly a community supported effort. Our (CSA) thrives on the collective support of our incredible community of our hardworking farmers and farm workers who bring fresh produce to our Oakland CSA hub, to our volunteers who rise early and work together seamlessly.

They take on the essential tasks of grouping and organizing crops into bags, meticulously ensuring weights and quantities are balanced for fair distribution, and arranging delicate items with the utmost care to prevent any mishaps. Their dedication extends to loading these bags into boxes, ready for delivery to our CSA members' doorsteps, or for the personal touch of in-person pickup, always accompanied by a warm smile :)

Thank you CSA for making dozens of satisfied CSA members have access to Legacy Foods grown by California Black Farmers.

Exciting news!

Freedom Farmers' Market will open on Saturday, August 12th! This year marks our 10th anniversary as more than just a place to buy fresh, local food grown by Black farmers. Freedom Farmers’ Market is a community hub inspired by the farmers' dedication to healthy land, community, and preserving traditional Legacy Food crops.

Founded in 2013 by cultural anthropologist and filmmaker Dr. Gail Myers, Freedom Farmers’ Market is named after the courageous freedom fighter, Fannie Lou Hamer and her Freedom Farm.
β€”
We appreciate your patience this year, as our farmers faced climate challenges due to heavy rain from December 2022 to mid-May, causing a delay in planting and harvest. However, this means we're opening the season with an exciting watermelon eating contest!

So save the date, Saturday August 12th, and spread the word! It's going to be a lovely celebration of delicious food, community, and the hard work of our incredible Black farmers. Don't miss out!

It's especially important to share the history of the CSA in order to highlight that Black and Indigenous people have been pioneers in creating sustainable and just systems that we are still trying to achieve today. One introduction of CSA models began with Dr. Booker T Whately, who believed in regenerating not just the soil, but also the livelihoods of Black Farmers. He developed a system where members could pay a membership fee to farms and get fresh and local produce, while also supporting farms and farmers directly and long term. Today, this idea has motivated and become understood as a CSA.

By supporting the ANV BeetBox CSA, your dollars are not only going into purchasing local, delicious, and sustainably grown fruits and vegetables, but many other things. Our program specifically works with small, family farmers of color and pays them a equitable and greater price for the nutrition and care they provide to our community as farmers and people. We also transfer any proceeds that are made into savings accounts for Oakland and ANV youth who participate in ANV programs. At ANV, we believe in uplifting and inspiring. Deeds Not Words! πŸ’—πŸŒ±
