Azalea wants to show you her special talent! Impressive, right?

With the command "up," Azalea will jump on top of any object—well, any object that can fit a 60 pound dog. She's gotten to work on this skill and lots of others while training in our Superstar Pup Academy!

Giving our dogs consistent, individualized training has been a game changer. Not only does it help them build the skills they need to succeed in their future homes, it also gives them a great mental workout and relieves the stress that can build up in the busy shelter environment. Learn more at animalcareleague.org/superstars, Azalea that you like her trick in the comments! 💚

Working with animals every day, we see so much love. Many of them are going through hardship, and many are scared and confused when they arrive at the shelter. But they don't harbor hate or judge us for who we are. They show love, however they know how.

We welcome everyone to the shelter—to adopt, to volunteer, to foster, and to get involved—because animals don't care which kinds of love are "traditional." Happy Pride everyone, and see you at the shelter 💚🌈

We want to give a huge thank you to Rescue Pack! Through partnerships with manufacturers and retailers, Rescue Pack collects and distributes extra pet food and supplies that would otherwise be thrown out. With their help, we can save significantly on essential supplies each month. This has been especially impactful when it comes to cat litter—thanks to Rescue Pack and World's Best Cat Litter, we’ve been able to stock up and make sure there’s always enough quality litter at the shelter!

In addition to food and supplies, Rescue Pack recently established a medical fund. When ACL dog Gabe (pictured) needed to go out of state for knee surgery, they helped pay for his care. With Gabe currently recovering well, we’re so grateful to have Rescue Pack’s help with important expenses, from medical procedures to the everyday basics that keep our shelter running.

Happy Foster Friday! This week, meet Nahlah: an incredibly sweet girl who came to ACL with some pretty intense allergies. Though Nahlah was clearly very itchy and missing some fur when she got here, her main priority was still to try to climb into the laps of our clinic staff for some snuggles.

Without knowing the source of Nahlah’s allergies or the best plan for treating them, we set her up in a foster home where she could get one-on-one attention while working to figure it out—not to mention lots more of those snuggles. “Nahlah loved wrestling with Emmett, our 40 pound pocket pit bull,” says her foster mom. “She also loved chasing squirrels in the back yard, playing fetch, sleeping, and snuggling with my husband. She comes when called; even from far away. And when she finds you, she is just thrilled that you thought of her.”

Now cleared for adoption, Nahlah is on special food and medication that keep her allergies under control. And while she waits for her forever family to come along, she’s in a second foster home getting spoiled!

“She's a total cuddler,” says her current foster mom. “We call her a ‘daddy's girl’ because she especially loves to cuddle with her foster dad. In talking with her previous foster, they noted she also had a special connection with her last foster dad!”

Nahlah has loved both of her foster families, and she’s been happy to go back and forth between them a few times. “She loves them AND she loves us and she's not picky,” her current foster mom says. “She's happy to be in any comfortable home. Her capacity for love is always growing.”

If you want to meet this wonderful cuddle bug, please fill out an application at animalcareleague.org/dogs, and we’ll set up a time to bring her in from foster care.

“Nahalah is such a happy, silly girl. It doesn't take much to make her happy. All she wants from you is a comfortable place to curl up next to you.”

Meet Jiminy, one of our ACL Superstars!

"Jiminy is a sweet pup with a big brain," says Kaylee, Jiminy's trainer in the Superstar Pup Academy. Through this program, shelter dogs like Jiminy get one-on-one training while they wait for homes. "He picked up on all of our training very fast and loves to learn."

Too often, shelter life takes a toll on pets, causing increased anxiety and stress. Especially for dogs, that stress can then lead to undesirable behaviors like jumping up. But by pairing shelter dogs with trainers through this program, we can help them manage their stress, learn skills and commands, show their best selves during adoption meets, and find the homes they deserve.

"Jim Jam loves affection and will come right up to you with a stuffie in his mouth trying to crawl into your lap," Kaylee says. "We've been working on 4 on the floor. he is a huge fan of getting pets."

Jiminy got his doggie diploma already, but he and Kaylee still work together regularly to make sure he can keep everything he learned. If you'd like to meet him, he's available for adoption now!
