No breakfast AND grooming first thing in the morning….This is the happiest face that the ambassador of good will could muster given the circumstances. Yoda James has a surgical procedure today, so, no food or water for him. 🫤he actually loves getting groomed, he loves all the one on one attention, but he does NOT love that he didn’t get to eat. This dog LIVES to eat.

Here’s something fun, that you’d NEVER expect to see posted on a professional pet groomers business page. 🫣

This is that time in my life when I THOUGHT I was a groomer. This poor dog. 😅😭

In 2005, I got my very first Standard Poodle. I was a vet tech at that time, NOT a groomer, and I knew absolutely nothing about caring for a Poodle coat. The person who handed me this beautiful dog said, “If you’re going to have a Poodle, you’re going to learn to groom a Poodle.” So I did my best. 😂 This was 2005. There weren’t a million YouTube videos teaching you everything. I’d bathe him, try to dry him with a human hairdryer, call it good enough, and then clip his wet coat with my $30 Walmart clippers. 🤦🏻‍♀️😂 He was ALWAYS matted, and he looked absolutely HORRENDOUS. I never once thought, “Maybe I should take him to a professional groomer.” 🫣 I also gave him plenty of tiny battle scars from my inexperience. Nothing serious. Luckily, I only had a 6-inch pair of curved scissors from my “grooming kit, so every wound he sustained was small nick from the clippers. No freaking wonder this dog hated grooming!😭😂

But here’s the thing…

I didn’t know what I didn’t know.

I loved that dog with every fiber of my being. I was taking care of him the best way I knew how. He looked awful. But he didn’t know that, and neither did I.

That very experience is exactly why I will NEVER shame someone who brings me an overgrown, matted, or not-so-well-kept dog. Sometimes neglect is obvious, and that’s super sad. But often, it’s simply people doing their best with the knowledge they have. This experience is ALSO why I feel so passionate about educating people about how to care for their pups individual hair coat. A poodle is NOT like a golden retriever (that was our second family dog), and a golden retriever is NOT like a beagle (that was our first family dog)! They all require very different care!

This is why I believe one of a groomer’s most important jobs is to educate—not shame. I tell owners EXACTLY what their dog’s coat needs, how to maintain it, and what it takes to keep their dog comfortable and healthy. Sometimes, people just need someone to teach them.

I know I did. ❤️🐩

I don’t typically work weekends, but occasionally I bend those rules especially when it’s me who has to make a schedule adjustment. This is Mica Moon. He’s waiting for his family to pick him up. I’m sitting on a stool next to him, he looks me in the eye, and gives me his paw with a giant poodle smile on his face. I seriously LOVE this dog.
