Even as we're starting fresh flower bouquets, we're starting to harvest for fall dried bouquets and wreaths. Some of these Craspedia will be used fresh, but most will be dried because they hold their color and shape so perfectly when dried - or when handled by little hands 😅

Timing is usually the key to interplanting, or planting two different crops in the same area. Tomatoes need good airflow, which means a lot of space between plants and rows. Interplanting lettuce helps us use some of that space while the tomatoes bulk up, but it took some experimenting to find the ideal lettuce variety. The last two years I've had good luck with the deep red Cherokee Summer Crisp, a Batavia type lettuce. This year I'm adding Fusion, another Batavia type with green curly leaves.

Our quality control crew has certified the bok choy ready for sale this weekend at Old Beach Farmers Market , along with our first harvest of broccolini. We'll also have radishes, chard, lettuce, and hopefully some spring onions too! And of course a ton of beautiful plants to get your garden going. See you bright and early!

Meet Malva sylvestris 'Zebrina.' She's often the first thing people notice in our gardens, with tall spires continuously boasting pinwheel purple blooms. This is her in all her glory last summer, where she was a superstar in our cut flower arrangements - she gives bucketfuls of long, sturdy stems that keep blooming after cut. She can soar to 4' or more by season's end! Malva sylvestris is a biennial, but as a gentle seeder she'll continue to return to the garden year after year.

Our new crop is looking great! Snag some established smaller pots of Malva Zebrina, Foxgloves, Dianthus and other perennials at this weekend's Old Beach Farmers Market . Get them now at a great value before they're bumped to their larger containers. They'll be glad to get in the ground early and will reward you with a great show this summer.

Our first Ghent Farmers Market of the season is tomorrow, Friday from 4-7! Along with our huge selection of herbs, vegetable plants, and flowers, I'll also be bringing a ton of special houseplants, succulents, and air plants to kick off the season. Like this rare Streptophylla x novakii cross, Vriesea sucrei variegata, Euphorbia lactea 'White Ghost', Hoya kerii variegata, Haworthia turgida in bloom, and more.

I'll also have some big mama stock plants as we make room in our greenhouses for all our newly established plants. It's a great time to snag a bushy, established Angel wing begonia 'Medora' or an overflowing Scindapsus pictus hanging basket.

Lots of beauties are blushing this week, including Ionantha 'Druid' which is a rare yellow blusher! Many Tillandsia become more colorful before they bloom to attract pollinators, like hummingbirds. Most blush red or purple and have brightly colored flowers, but Druid turns a bright yellow and flowers in white. Here it is next to Ionantha 'Fuego' and 'Rubra' along with a Bracycaulous.

Spring is for the bees! We do a lot of w**ding in spring to get our beds ready for planting, but I like to leave this patch for last. Much of our fruit lives here - blueberries, raspberries and a dwarf peach tree. It's currently surrounded by dead nettle, which has long been used as an apothecary herb for its anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. It doesn't like the heat though, so it's relatively easy to w**d out in late spring. Leaving dead nettle to bloom gives the bees extra food and an extra reason to come pollinate our fruit! After all, a w**d is just a wildflower growing in the wrong place.
