Introducing factual Friday, where we will do an episode every week about information regarding pets and how to keep them safe and healthy.
🐾🐶Episode 1 Why Dogs Should NOT Ride in Truck Beds/Hot pavement on paws 🐾
Riding in the bed of a truck may seem fun, but it’s extremely dangerous for dogs. Here’s why:
1. High Risk of Injury or Death
• Dogs can be thrown from the bed during a sudden stop, turn, or collision.
• Even a small bump in the road can cause a dog to lose balance and fall.
2. Lack of Protection
• There’s no barrier between your dog and the road, other vehicles, or roadside hazards.
• Debris like rocks or branches can hit them, causing injury.
3. Risk of Being Strangled
• Tethering your dog in the truck bed may seem safer, but if the dog falls over the side, it could be dragged or strangled.
4. Weather Exposure
• Truck beds get extremely hot or cold depending on the season, causing heatstroke or hypothermia.
5. It May Be Illegal
• Many states and provinces have laws against transporting dogs in open truck beds without proper restraint or protection.
🔥 Hot Pavement Can Burn Paw Pads
Dogs’ paws are tough—but not invincible. Here’s why you should avoid hot pavement:
1. Pavement Temperature Rises Quickly
• When the air temperature is 85°F (29°C), the pavement can reach 135°F (57°C) or hotter.
• At this temperature, burns can occur in less than a minute.
2. Signs of Burned Paw Pads
• Limping or refusing to walk
• Darkened, red, or blistered paw pads
• Licking or chewing at paws
3. Simple Rule: The 7-Second Test
• Place the back of your hand on the pavement. If it’s too hot to hold it there for 7 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.
4. Safer Alternatives
• Walk dogs early in the morning or late in the evening.
• Stick to shaded areas, grass, or use dog booties.
• Carry water to keep your dog hydrated.
⸻
✅ Safe Practices
• Keep dogs inside the cab with you when driving. Use a pet seat belt or crate for safety.
• Check pavement temperature before walking your dog.
• Know the signs of heatstroke: heavy panting, drooling, vomiting, weakness.
Now you know how to keep your pets safe and healthy! 🐾🐶
