🧪 When Should Dogs Be Tested for Heartworm disease?
Annually: All dogs should be tested for heartworm once a year, even if they are on year-round prevention.

Before Starting Prevention: If a dog is 6 months or older and has never been on heartworm prevention, they should be tested before starting to ensure they are not already infected.

6-Month Follow-Up:
If a dog is:
✅ Testing negative on their first heartworm test, and
✅ Not previously on prevention,
👉 it is recommended to test again in 6 months.
This helps catch any infection that may have been too early to detect on the first test.

After Missed or Late Doses: If a dose was missed or given late, testing is often recommended 6 months later, as it can take that long for heartworms to mature enough to be detected.

There is currently NO approved treatment for heartworm disease in cats.

While there is treatment available for dogs, it’s important to understand that by the time a dog is diagnosed, IRREVERSABLE damage to the heart and lungs has already occurred.
