We know how easy it is to chalk up weight loss in an older horse to "just getting old."

Thank you so much to our equine community for your contributions to our Fire Relief Fund! Our work is not done though, as we continue to help those in need from the tragic fires in our area. If you would like to contribute, you may do so both in monetary donations or with "in kind" donations at both of our hospital locations.

When you check out after your appointment, our office staff will ask if you'd like to round up to the nearest dollar or any other dollar amount you would like to donate. If you are not able to do so, that's okay. If you do, that's great!

Please welcome Dr. Elizabeth (Liz) Cheyne, one of our two new interns here at McKinley & Peters.

Liz graduated from Oregon State University this spring. She's mainly interested in equine medicine, especially lameness and sports medicine, along with reproduction, and she'd like to do a little mixed practice down the road because she loves dogs and cats too.

She took a bit of a different route to join us as an intern, but after visiting and meeting everybody recently, she says she's excited to learn from all our clinicians and hear how they work through cases. We're just as excited to have her here with us for the next year!

Please welcome Dr. Maddy Dashiell! She is one of our new interns here at McKinlay & Peters.

Maddy graduated from Michigan State this past May. She's an Ohio native who came all the way out here to the Inland Northwest for her internship. Maddy's big interest is equine medicine overall. She told me she chose this program because it's well rounded and everyone really cares about one another and about teaching.

Her takeaway after her first six hours on the job? A family oriented practice that's excited to help her grow as a new grad. We're happy to have you, Maddy!

At McKinlay & Peters Equine Hospital, we have started a fire relief fund for horse owners in our community who were affected by the fires, those who had to evacuate or had losses and are in a hard spot financially.

Dawn at our front desk is helping collect donations. When you check out after an appointment with us, we'll ask if you'd like to round up to the nearest dollar or any other dollar amount. If you can't or don't, that's okay. If you do, that's fantastic.

***IMPORTANT RECALL INFORMATION***

McKinlay & Peters Equine Hospital just learned that there's a recent recall on Adequan for horses, specifically the 500mg per 5ml single dose 5ml vials. Two lot numbers are affected: lot 24416 and lot 25265P. We've learned that one recalled bottle was dispensed from our location prior to learning of the recall, so please take a moment to look at what you have on hand before injecting your horse.

If you find a bottle under recall, give our office a call at 509-928-6734 and we'll help you sort it out.

We are so very sad to see the terrible devastation and displacement of so many people and their animals due to the catastrophic fires in the Spokane region. Our thoughts & prayers are with all those affected and with the brave firefighters working so tirelessly.

These extremely smokey conditions are of considerable heath concern for everyone - including horses too! The air quality changes almost hourly - to know the current conditions please visit:

Here you will find a chart that updates conditions every hour on the half hour.

Our own Dr. Amanda Craven, DVM, DACVIM-LA offers the following information to assist you in caring for your horses in smokey conditions. Smoke can affect horse's lungs, especially the ones already dealing with asthma, pneumonia, or other upper or lower airway issues. Please watch for nasal discharge, coughing, harder breathing, or if your horse seems tired and off their feed.
If the air quality index hits 101-150, horses with respiratory problems shouldn't be exercised. Above 200, even healthy horses need to skip heavy work and stay in low-dust areas. Other things to keep an eye on are making sure that your horses have access to water that is clear of particulate matter and is ideally located in shaded areas with good ventilation.

Believe it or not, it's already time to start thinking about the 2027 breeding season! Whether you're planning your first embryo transfer or you're a seasoned breeder, preparing early is one of the best ways to set yourself up for success.

One of the most important pieces of a successful embryo transfer program is the recipient mare. Recipient mares are the surrogate mothers that carry and raise your foal after an embryo is transferred from the donor mare. While they may not contribute genetically to the foal, they play an incredibly important role by providing a healthy, safe environment for the pregnancy and giving the foal the best possible start in life.

Finding quality recipient mares can be one of the biggest challenges during breeding season. Having healthy, reproductively sound mares available at the right stage of their cycle is essential for maximizing embryo transfer success.

At McKinlay & Peters Equine Hospital, we know that healthy feet are the foundation of a healthy horse.

One of the most valuable tools in managing hoof health is the partnership between veterinarians and farriers. By working together, we can evaluate each horse's unique needs and develop a plan that supports long-term comfort, soundness, and quality of life.

Our very own Dr. Sarah Montoya explains, "A joint vet/farrier appointment can be extremely useful, especially for more complicated cases or horses rehabbing from injury."

Using radiographs (x-rays) before and after trimming, and sometimes after shoe placement, allows us to evaluate hoof balance and alignment with greater precision. This collaborative approach can be especially beneficial for horses dealing with conditions such as laminitis, metabolic disease, chronic lameness, or rehabilitation from injury.

Proper hoof care isn't just about performance. It's about helping horses stay comfortable, mobile, and able to enjoy the activities they love with the people who love them.
