Leptospirosis : What Eastern WA Dog Owners Need to Know
Leptospirosis is a dangerous bacterial disease that affects both dogs and humans, and there is an increased risk here in Eastern Washington โ especially in late summer and fall.
๐ฆ What is it?
Leptospirosis (or "lepto") is spread through the urine of infected animals โ including wildlife like raccoons, skunks, deer, and rodents. Dogs can get it by drinking from or swimming in contaminated water (puddles, ponds, streams) or even just walking through wet soil.
๐พ Dogs at highest risk:
โ๏ธ Hikers, swimmers, and outdoor adventurers
โ๏ธ Dogs who live near wildlife or on farms
โ๏ธ Urban dogs exposed to rats or standing water
๐ถ Symptoms in dogs may include:
๐ธ Fever, lethargy
๐ธ Vomiting, diarrhea
๐ธ Increased thirst or urination
๐ธ Jaundice (yellow skin/eyes)
๐ธ Muscle pain or stiffness
โ ๏ธ Why it's serious:
Leptospirosis can lead to kidney or liver failure, and it's also zoonotic โ meaning it can spread from dogs to humans.
๐ Treatment is available โ but early action is critical!
If caught early, leptospirosis can be treated with antibiotics and supportive care such as:
๐น IV fluids to support kidney function
๐น Anti-nausea medications
๐น Hospitalization in severe cases
๐ข The sooner it's treated, the better the outcome โ for both your pet and your family.
โ
Prevention tips:
โ๏ธ Vaccinate your dog โ the lepto vaccine is safe and effective
โ๏ธ Avoid letting dogs drink from or swim in standing water
โ๏ธ Control rodents around your home
โ๏ธ Clean up pet waste promptly
๐ Call us to ask about the lepto vaccine or schedule an exam if your dog shows any concerning symptoms. Letโs keep your pets (and your family) safe this season! ๐พ
